Santiago Pinzon Joins Storm Administrative Staff

PAINESVILLE, OHIO – Lake Erie College Director of Athletics Reid Guarnieri formally announced the addition of Santiago Pinzon to the Storm administrative team as Assistant Athletic Director for Internal Operations/Director of Compliance Thursday (Aug. 15).

Pinzon will direct and oversee the areas of compliance, athletics academic services and assist with department budget reconciliation for 23 varsity sports teams while serving as a liaison between several College departments. In his primary role, he will work to ensure the Storm teams, along with faculty, staff and boosters, operate within institutional, Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) and NCAA rules and regulations.

“We are so very pleased to have found Santiago Pinzon to run our compliance program at Lake Erie College,” Guarnieri said.  “He brings a wealth of knowledge and experience from multiple levels of intercollegiate athletics.  First, he appreciates the life of a student-athlete having been a Division II soccer athlete and SAAC representative.  Second, he has a pattern of success as an administrator - first with Conference Carolinas and most recently with Division I Troy University.

“His work ethic and intelligence are undeniable and will lend extremely well to running a successful operation here at LEC.  We are excited for him to get started working with our coaches and student-athletes.”

A former student-athlete at the Division II level, Pinzon comes to Lake Erie from Troy University in Troy, Alabama where he spent the past two years in the Trojan Athletic Department as a graduate assistant working in the areas of compliance and game and special events operations. While at Troy he worked directly with the Compliance Director and the Sun Belt Conference office to ensure eligibility requirements for all student-athletes as well as monitor and review potential issues for all 17 Trojan sports. He also assisted in gameday management for football and basketball games at Troy. His work was rewarded with a nomination and acceptance for a fellowship with the Sun Belt Conference in January of 2012 where he served as a coaches’ liaison at the conference level for the Sun Belt basketball tournament.

Additionally, Pinzon gained valuable administrative experience as an intern at the IMG Soccer Academy, serving as the primary contact for the USA Women’s U-20 national team, and in the Compliance Office of Conference Carolinas. His responsibilities at Conference Carolinas included supervising of the conference Student-Athlete Advisory Committee program and reviewing, validating and monitoring the National Letter of Intent program.

As a student-athlete at North Georgia College and State University (now University of North Georgia), Pinzon was a four-year letterman on the soccer team as a midfielder. He was a multiple Dean’s List and Peach Belt Conference Presidential Honor Roll honoree and received the North Georgia Department of Athletics All-Academic Award in 2007.

He served as the school’s SAAC president and as a Peach Belt Conference SAAC member. In 2010 he participated in the NCAA’s Student-Athlete Leadership Forum, Student-Athletes Affairs Regional Symposium and Effective Facilitation Workshop. Pinzon also volunteered at NCAA Division II Regional and Super Regional events as well as the XX Central American and Caribbean Sports Games in 2006.

“I sincerely thank Reid Guarnieri, Vice President (of Enrollment Management Robin) Johnson and President Victor for the fantastic opportunity to come to Lake Erie College and be part of a growing team,” Pinzon said. “Lake Erie has a very bright future and I am excited to be part of the continuous growth and development of the Department of Athletics.”

The Cali, Colombia native earned his bachelor’s degree from North Georgia in 2010 in marketing and a Master of Science degree in Sport and Fitness Management from Troy in 2013.
