Lake Erie Loses In Long-Inning Battle Then Falls to Darkness

ELKINS, W.Va. (March 10, 2009) - Lake Erie College lost a double header to Davis and Elkins College, 9-8 in 12 innings, then 6-5 in a six-inning game called because of darkness. The Storm compiled 23 hits on the afternoon with seven going for extra bases.

The day's opener was a four-plus hour battle in which Lake Erie got out to a 7-0 lead after five and a half innings. A three-run, fifth inning included three hits with singles by senior Ben Reed (Middlefield, Ohio/Cardinal) and sophomore Brandon James (Mentor, Ohio/Mentor) and a double by freshman Ryan Rua (Amherst, Ohio/Amherst). Senior pitcher Paul Roskos (Timberlake, Ohio/Eastlake North) pitched five and two thirds innings, giving up only three earned runs and striking out three. Host Davis and Elkins began the comeback in the bottom of the sixth with three runs, then scored four more in the following inning to tie the game at seven. The Storm tacked on the go-ahead run in the 12th inning after a leadoff double by James and an RBI single by sophomore Dan Dowdell (North Ridgeville, Ohio/North Ridgeville). Davis and Elkins scored two runs in the bottom of the inning after leading off with a home run then putting two runners on base on two hits followed by a walk to load the bases with one out. The winning run came on a wild pitch.

Rua and Reed finished the game 3-for-3 with two runs and an RBI apiece. James went 3-for-5 with two runs and two RBIs as the team totaled 14 hits - the most in a game this season.

In the nightcap, the Storm scored two runs in the top of the first only to be outdone by its opponents who scored four in the bottom half of the inning. Davis and Elkins scored twice more in the third to take a 6-2 lead. Lake Erie scored in the fourth and then plated two more runs in the sixth before the game was called due to darkness. Freshman Patrick Stantial went 2-for-3 in his debut in the leadoff spot. Rua and senior Harry Konrad (Mentor, Ohio/Mentor) each went 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI.

Lake Erie (1-7) heads to Chillicothe, Ohio for a four-game series at Veterans Memorial Field March 14-15. On Saturday, the team takes on Findlay at 1 p.m. and Grand Valley State at 4 p.m. Then on Sunday, the Storm plays Grand Valley State at 1 p.m. then Findlay at 4 p.m.
