Lake Erie Begins Four-Game Series with Columbia Union

PAINESVILLE, Ohio (May 3, 2009) - Lake Erie College lost in doubleheader action to Columbia Union College out of Maryland, 5-0 and 6-3. The visitors played flawless ball in the field both games, making the Storm earn each of its runs. The green and white outhit the Pioneers by five in game two, but still came up short in the end.

In the opener, Lake Erie went with a straight nine in the lineup and totaled three hits, including one from pitcher Dan Mason (Eastlake, Ohio/North) who threw all seven innings without a walk. The guests scored their five runs on 11 hits.

In the nightcap, the Storm recorded 11 hits compared to Columbia Union's six. The Storm scored a run in the first inning after a lead off double by freshman Patrick Stantial (West Farmington, Ohio/Southington) and an RBI double by sophomore Brandon James (Mentor, Ohio/Mentor). The Pioneers scored a lone run in both the second and third innings to take a brief lead at 2-1. The Storm scored the tying run in the bottom of the third on singles by sophomore Dan Dowdell (North Ridgeville, Ohio/North Ridgeville), senior Ben Reed (Middlefield, Ohio/Cardinal) and freshman Ryan Rua (Amherst, Ohio/Amherst). Columbia Union then posted a three-run fifth inning with another run in the sixth to regain the lead at 6-2. Lake Erie scored its final run in the sixth on doubles by freshmen Michael Morgan (Russells Point, Ohio/Indian Lake) and Matt Toth (Lorain, Ohio/Admiral King).

Reed went 3-for-4 and Dowdell went 2-for-3 with one run to lead the Storm.

Lake Erie (15-34) has its final doubleheader of the season on Monday at Rec Park against Columbia Union beginning at 1 p.m.
