BAY CITY, MICH. – The Lake Erie College baseball team was picked to finish fifth in the now 12-team Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) by a vote of the league coaches in the annual preseason poll released by the conference office Wednesday (Feb. 20).
The Storm totaled 75 points in the voting. Last year Lake Erie posted a 27-26 overall record, including a 22-14 GLIAC mark, and finished third in the regular season while qualifying for the GLIAC Tournament for the first time. The Storm's 22 league wins were the second most in the conference last year as well.
This season Lake Erie returns 17 letter-winners including five All-GLIAC players in seniors Adam Beach (Vermillion, Ohio/Vermillion), Cody Blood (Conneaut, Ohio/Conneaut), Doug Fox (Parma, Ohio/Valley Forge) and Patrick Kilway (Tallmadge, Ohio/Tallmadge) as well as junior Brian Kilway (Tallmadge, Ohio/Tallmadge).
The Storm open their season this weekend with a three-game series at perennial regional and national power University of Southern Indiana Feb. 22-24.
Defending champion Grand Valley State University was once again voted the league favorite, followed by last year's runner-up Wayne State University. Both teams qualified for the NCAA Tournament a year ago.
They were followed by Ashland University and Saginaw Valley State University, just ahead of the Storm. Ohio Dominican University was two points behind Lake Erie in sixth.
