Chargers Jump Out Early to Take Series From Storm

ADRIAN, MICH. – Host Hillsdale College jumped out to a 4-1 lead after one inning and never looked back en route to a series-clinching 9-4 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference victory over the Lake Erie College baseball team Sunday (March 24) at Siena Heights University.

After Lake Erie (5-13, 2-3 GLIAC) manufactured a run in the top of the first inning, the Chargers (9-7, 2-1 GLIAC) took command in the bottom half. Mike Vanchieri had a two-run single while Geordy Smith and Connor Bartlett followed with RBI hits.

Smith drove in Vanchieri again in the third inning and Hillsdale added an unearned run in the fourth to make the score 6-1.

The Storm loaded the bases in the fifth, but managed just one run. Vinny Delicata singled in two more as the Chargers scored three times in the seventh to put the game away.

Chris McDonald (3-1) got the win on the mound, limiting the Storm to just two runs (one earned) on two hits in 4 1/3 innings while working his way around eight walks.  Jacob Gardner finished the final 4 2/3 innings for his first save.  He allowed two runs on four hits with a walk and six strikeouts.

Junior Brad Raley (Hinckley, Ohio/Highland) took the loss for the Storm, surrendering six runs (five earned) on eight hits in 5 2/3 innings with a walk and a career-high 12 strikeouts. Raley's (0-2) 12 K's were one short of the school, single-game record.

Freshmzan Zach DeCamp (Gahanna, Ohio/St. Francis DeSales) was the only Storm batter with two hits.  Senior Cody Blood (Conneaut, Ohio/Conneaut) drove in two runs while junior Garrett Emling (Tallmadge, Ohio/Tallmadge) scored twice.

Smith led the Chargers with three hits while Vanchieri, Delicata and Luke Ortel each had two hits.

The Storm is scheduled to open the home portion of its schedule on Wednesday, March 27, against Ohio Dominican University.
