PAINESVILLE, OHIO – Visiting Saginaw Valley State University took full advantage of a 22-mile per hour wind blowing out at Braggs Field, belting seven home runs in a 16-6 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference victory over the Lake Erie College baseball team Sunday (April 7) to sweep the three-game weekend series.
Kyle O'Boyle, Chet Lafave and Chris Perkovich all homered twice for the Cardinals (9-13, 7-5 GLIAC). Both of Lafave's shots were three-run blasts, giving him six runs batted in for the game. His second big fly in the fifth made it 13-0.
Andy Orr, who matched Perkovich with three hits in the game, also went deep. Saginaw Valley scored five times in the first on three home runs and then added two more round-trippers to score four times in the second.
Aaron Lindgren (Willoughby, Ohio/Willoughby South) hit a solo home run in the fifth inning for the Storm (7-20, 4-10 GLIAC). He also scored on a sacrifice fly by Zach Mosbarger (Bellefontaine, Ohio/Bellefontaine) in the seventh.
Garrett Emling (Tallmadge, Ohio/Tallmadge) had two hits, including a two-run single.
Backed by plenty of offense, Carson Beachaine (2-1) breezed through six efficient innings, holding Lake Erie to just a run on five hits. He only allowed one hit before Lindgren's home run and did not walk a batter in the game. He also struck out four.
Brad Schalk had three hits and scored three times for Saginaw Valley. Orr also scored three times and four other Cardinals scored twice.
Doug Fox (Parma, Ohio/Valley Forge) was touched for eight runs on eight hits in 1 2/3 innings. Fox (1-2) surrendered four of the Cardinals' seven home runs.
The Storm opens a five-game road trip Wednesday, April 10, with a doubleheader at Walsh University in Canton, Ohio.
