PAINESVILLE, OHIO – Senior Zach Mosbarger (Bellefontaine, Ohio/Bellefontaine) singled through a drawn-in infield to plate Tyler Lindgren (Willoughby, Ohio/Willoughby South/Notre Dame) with the winning run in the bottom of the ninth as the Lake Erie College baseball team defeated visiting Ohio Dominican University, 6-5, in a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game Tuesday (April 16) at Braggs Field.
Mosbarger's hit made up for a miscue by the senior centerfielder in the top half of the inning that allowed the Panthers (13-20, 9-10 GLIAC) to tie the game. Mosbarger charged a sinking liner by pinch hitter Christian Ponder and had the ball ricochet off his leg after it hit the ground and pinch runner Dylan West came in to score from second to tie it at 5-5.
But the Storm (9-22, 6-12 GLIAC) bounced right back. Senior Doug Fox (Parma, Ohio/Valley Forge) retired the final two Panther hitters and sophomore Josh Hudeck (Macedonia, Ohio/Trinity/Ashland) led off the bottom of the ninth with a sharp single up the middle. Lindgren came on to run and advanced to second after first baseman Collin Parcher was called for interference on a pick-off attempt. He then moved to third on a sacrifice by sophomore Sean Mathews (Washington, Mich./Warren De La Salle) ahead of Mosbarger's hit.
Early on, it looked as though there would be little drama in the game as the Storm took an early 3-0 lead and had a 3-1 advantage in the sixth behind senior starter Adam Beach (Vermillion, Ohio/Vermillion). Anthony Raschilla, who scored the Panthers' first run, put Ohio Dominican on top for the first time with a two-out, wind-aided three-run homer to make it 4-3.
A two-run single by Mathews in the bottom of the sixth put Lake Erie back on top at 5-4, a score that would remain intact until the final frame.
Hudeck, Mathews and freshman Zach DeCamp (Gahanna, Ohio/St. Francis DeSales) each had two hits to pace the Storm offense, with DeCamp scoring two runs.
Raschilla had two hits, scored twice and drove in three runs to lead the Panthers. Marcus Schluessler also had two hits for ODU.
Fox (2-3) pitched the final three innings to earn the win, despite missing out on the save after the unearned run scored in the ninth. He allowed three hits and struck out four in his three innings in relief of Beach who allowed three earned runs (four total) on four hits in six innings. He walked four and struck out three.
Alex Borgan pitched 5 2/3 innings for Ohio Dominican, allowing five runs on eight hits with a walk and five strikeouts. Releiver Vince Bartolone (2-3) allowed the winning run and two hits in 2 1/3 innings to suffer the loss.
The Storm, who won the season series from the Panthers 2-1, hosts Walsh University for two games on Wednesday, April 17, beginning at 2 p.m.
