Storm Wins Two Against Hillsdale

PAINESVILLE, Ohio— The Lake Erie College baseball team picked up a pair of Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) wins Saturday (May 2) at home against Hillsdale College.

The Storm won game one 10-8 and game two 5-3.

GAME ONE

After Sean Mathews (Washington, Mich./Warren De La Salle) was walked to lead off the bottom of the first, Lucas Raley (Hinckley, Ohio/Medina Highland) hit a two-run shot to right field.  Zak DeCamp (Gahanna, Ohio/St. Francis DeSales) and Aaron Lindgren (Willoughby, Ohio/Willoughby South) reached safely to follow up the homerun.  Louie Peterlin (Mentor, Ohio/Lake Catholic) advanced the runners with a sac bunt.  Cale Giddings (Pickerington, Ohio/Pickerington North/Akron) doubled to left center to bring them home.  With the bases loaded later in the inning, Mathews was walked for a second time, bringing Giddings home to give the Storm a 5-0 lead.

In the second, DeCamp reached on an error and advanced to third on a Lindgren double down the right field line.  Peterlin was walked to load the bases.  Ruter Luebke (Medina, Ohio/Medina) hit a sac fly to right field, scoring DeCamp.  Giddings hit a deep fly ball to center, bringing Lindgren home. 

In the third, DeCamp hit a two-run homerun to right field, scoring Mathews. 

The Chargers plated five runs in the fourth.

Lindgren led off the sixth with a solo shot to right field to increase the lead to five.

The Chargers cut the lead to two in the ninth but Brandon Grunda (Elyria, Ohio/Elyria) came in for the final two outs to pick up the save. 

Giddings led the Storm with three RBIs while DeCamp and Raley had two.  Lindgren had three runs and three hits.  DeCamp also came across the plate three times.

Heath Kelley (Mentor, Ohio/Mentor) picked up the win on the mound, going six innings, giving up five runs while striking out four.

GAME TWO

With the Storm trailing by two in the second, Peterlin led off with a double.  After Luebke reached via error, Darren Sackett (Loveland, Ohio/Loveland) brought Peterlin home on a sac fly to cut the lead to one. 

After Mathews led off the third with a double DeCamp hit his second homerun of the game to give the Storm a 3-2 lead.

With Sackett on first in the bottom of the seventh, Austin Bovenzi (Fairport, N.Y./McQuaid Jesuit) hit a double down the right field line, bringing in Sackett and extending the lead to two.  With Bovenzi at third, Raley hit a sac fly to center to give the Storm a 5-2 lead.

The Chargers threatened in the top of the ninth, scoring one run, but was unable to overcome the Storm advantage.

Brian Bullock (Loveland, Ohio/Loveland) picked up the win for the Storm, going 6.2 innings, giving up just runs.  Grunda picked up his second save of the day, going 2.1 innings.

DeCamp had two RBIs to lead the Storm while Raley had two hits.

The Storm concludes the series with Hillsdale Sunday (May 3).
