Storm Completes Four-Game Sweep of Hillsdale

PAINESVILLE, Ohio— The Lake Erie College baseball team finished their season with two wins over Hillsdale College in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) action Sunday (May 3), completing the four-game sweep of the weekend series.

The Storm won game one 9-6 and game two 16-10.

GAME ONE

After the Chargers scored in the top of the fourth, Sean Mathews (Washington, Mich./Warren De La Salle) answered with a run.  With Lucas Raley (Hinckley, Ohio/Medina Highland) on third, Zak DeCamp (Gahanna, Ohio/St. Francis) hit a two-run homerun to deep center to give the Storm a 3-1 lead.  After Aaron Lindgren (Willoughby, Ohio/Willoughby South) doubled and moved to third, he scored on Rutger Luebke's (Medina, Ohio/Medina) stolen base.  Luebke scored on a Darren Sackett (Loveland, Ohio/Loveland) groundout to bring the score to 5-1. 

Leading 5-2 in the fifth with Lindgren and DeCamp aboard, Louie Peterlin (Mentor, Ohio/Lake Catholic) hit a two RBI single to give the Storm a 7-2 lead. 

After the Chargers came brought the lead down to two, DeCamp doubled to left center to score Raley.  Lindgren followed up with a single to center, scoring DeCamp.

The Chargers threatened in the bottom of the seventh but was unable to overcome the Storm lead.

Connor Fuller picked up the win, going 5.2 innings, allowing four earned runs.  Brandon Grunda (Elyria, Ohio/Elyria) picked up the save.

DeCamp had two hits, three runs and three RBIs to lead the Storm. 

GAME TWO

After Raley and DeCamp hit back-to-back singles, Lindgren brought them home to give the Storm a 2-0 lead.  A Peterlin single to center brought Lindgren across the plate to give the Storm a 3-0 lead at the end of one.

The Chargers plated one in the second but the Storm answered in the bottom of the frame when Raley doubled to score Sackett.  The Chargers gained the lead in the fourth, scoring four runs.

Wes Birchmeier (Miamisburg, Ohio/Miamisburg) led off the fifth with a single.  A deep double by Mathews brought Birchmeier around the bases, cutting the lead to two.  Raley followed up the double with a two-run blast to right center to tie the game.  DeCamp singled and stole second before Lindgren knocked him in with a double down the right field line.

The Chargers tied the game in the sixth, but once again the Storm mounted a comeback.  After Birchmeier and Mathews reached safely, Raley brought a run home.  DeCamp hit his second homerun of the day, a three-run shot to left center, to give the Storm a four run lead.  With Lindgren and Peterlin aboard, Luebke singled down the third base line, scoring one.   

In the bottom of the seventh with Mathews and Raley on, DeCamp hit a two RBI double to left center, giving the Storm a seven run lead.  Lindgren brought DeCamp home with a single to left field.

The Chargers added two runs in the ninth but it was not enough to overcome the Storm lead.

Russ Hogue (Belle Center, Ohio/Indian Lake) picked up the win, going six innings, giving up three earned runs.

The Storm offense produced 21 hits.  Raley went five-for-five at the plate with four runs and four RBIs.  DeCamp went four-of-six with four runs and five RBIs.  Lindgren went four-for-four with two runs and four RBIs.  Mathews had two hits and three runs while Peterlin and Birchmeier had two hits apiece.
