Storm Splits with Malone in Home Opener

PAINESVILLE, Ohio— The Lake Erie College baseball team opened up the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) and home portions of their 2016 schedule against Malone University Friday (March 25).

The Storm fell in game one 7-5 but bounced back with a 5-1 win in game two.

GAME ONE

The Storm bats got off to a hot start.  Rees Rua (Amherst, Ohio/Amherst Steele) reached second on an error to start the inning.  Lucas Raley (Hinckley, Ohio/Medina Highland) followed with a homerun to left center.  The next batter, Zak DeCamp (Gahanna, Ohio/St. Francis DeSales), took after Raley and hit a bomb to deep center to give the Storm a three run lead on back-to-back homeruns.

The Pioneers answered with one run in the top of the second to cut the lead to two.

After a scoreless third inning, the Pioneers scored five runs between the fourth and sixth to take a 6-3 lead.

In the bottom of the sixth, Cale Giddings (Pickerington, Ohio/Pickerington Central/Akron) hit a solo shot to right center to cut the Pioneers run and bring the game within three.

Raley led off the bottom of the seventh with a shot to deep right center to bring the game within two.  DeCamp singled to follow Raley.  The Pioneers walked the next two batters, loading the bases for the Storm.  However, the Pioneers retired the last three batters of the inning to hold on for the win.

Raley went three-of-four with two runs and three RBI. DeCamp also went three-of-four with a run and a RBI.

Brian Bullock (Loveland, Ohio/Loveland) started the game on the mound for the Storm.  In a no-decision, he pitched three innings allowing one earned run with two strikeouts.

GAME TWO

The Pioneers first two batters of the game reached safely but Russell Lamovec (Willoughby Hills, Ohio/Willoughby South) struck out the next three batters swinging to get out of the jam.

Rutger Luebke (Medina, Ohio/Medina) earned a one-out walk in the bottom of the first.  He stole second, and then reached third on a pass ball.  After Raley was walked, DeCamp hit a sacrifice fly to right field, bringing Luebke in for the first run of the game.

Louie Peterlin (Mentor, Ohio/Lake Catholic) led off the second with another Storm homerun to right center, increasing the lead to two.

Raley led off the bottom of the third by reaching base on an error by the first baseman.  He stole second and reached third on an error.  On a Nigel Williams (Cincinnati, Ohio/La Salle) groundout, Raley reached home to bring the lead to 3-0.

Lamovec continued to shine on the mound, giving up just one run through the first six innings with 10 strikeouts.

In the bottom of the sixth, DeCamp reached second via error.  Williams brought him home with a single, increasing the lead to three once again.

Two innings later, Giddings hit his second homerun of the doubleheader, this time to right field, extending the lead to 5-1.

Michael Stryffeler (Sagamore Hills, Ohio/Padua Franciscan) pitched the last two innings for the Storm and allowed zero runs to secure the conference win.

Lamovec ended the game going 7.0 innings allowing five hits and one earned run while striking out 11.
