Storm Splits with Tiffin in GLIAC Action

TIFFIN, Ohio—The Lake Erie College baseball team opened a four game Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) series at Tiffin University Friday (April 29) with a doubleheader.

The Storm won game one 3-1 but fell in game two 6-3.

GAME ONE

The Storm got on the board in the top of the first.  Lucas Raley (Hinckley, Ohio/Medina Highland) hit a two out double to left center.  Rutger Luebke (Medina, Ohio/Medina) followed with a single to right field, driving Raley home.

In the second, the Dragons got on the board to tie the game at one.

The pitchers took over until the Storm regained the lead in the fifth.

Wes Birchmeier (Miamisburg, Ohio/Miamisburg) was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning. Jake Csizmadia (Elyria, Ohio/Elyria) came in to run for him.  After Csizmadia reached second on a wild pitch, Nigel Williams (Cincinnati, Ohio/La Salle) singled to center field, scoring Csizmadia. 

Luebke led off the sixth with a single.  Tyler Bires (Lorain, Ohio/Amherst) came in to run for him and scored on an error to extend the lead to two.

The Storm shut down the Dragons in the final two innings to seal the win.

David Lemasters (Cortland, Ohio/Lakeview) went the full seven innings on the mound for the Storm in the win.  He gave up just one run while striking out seven.

Luebke had a pair of hits for the Storm.  Raley had a hit and a run while Williams had a RBI.

GAME TWO

Rees Rua (Amherst, Ohio/Amherst) led off game two with a double.  Williams then singled down the right field line, scoring Rua.

The Dragons matched the Storm's run in the second but the Storm got it back in the third.  Austin Bovenzi (Fairport, N.Y./McQuaid Jesuit) was walked to lead off the inning.  The Storm earned two walks to load the bases.  Luebke hit a sac fly, bringing Bovenzi in to give the Storm the lead. 

In the fourth, Kody Bledsoe (Elyria, Ohio/Amherst Steele) got hit by a pitch to lead off.  Cale Giddings (Pickerington, Ohio/North Pickerington/Akron) doubled to move Bledsoe to third.  Birchmeier followed up with a sac fly to bring Bledsoe home and give the Storm a 3-1 lead. 

In the bottom of the fifth, the Dragons scored three runs to take the lead. 

The Storm put two runners on in the sixth and the seventh but was unable to bring them home.

In the bottom of the eighth, the Dragons added two runs.

Rua was walked to lead off the ninth but was called out on a fielder's choice by Raley two batters later.  After Ryan Grieco (Murrysville, Pa./Franklin Regional) walked, Louie Peterlin (Mentor, Ohio/Lake Catholic) struck out but got to first on a wild pitch, loading the bases.  However, the Dragons secured the third out to hold on for the win.

Rua and Giddings had two hits apiece for the Storm.  Williams, Luebke and Burchmeier had a RBI.  Raley was walked twice.

Connor Fuller (Euclid, Ohio/Euclid) started on the mound for the Storm.  He gave up one earned run in five innings while striking out two.  Michael Stryffeler (Sagamore Hills, Ohio/Padua Franciscan) pitched three innings of relief.  He gave two unearned runs and two hits with a pair of strikeouts.

The Storm is back in action tomorrow to conclude the series.  The game time is moved up to 10 a.m.
