Storm Announces 2009 Recruiting Class

PAINESVILLE, Ohio (May 8, 2009) - The Lake Erie College football team, led by head coach Mark McNellie, recently announced its recruiting class for the upcoming 2009 season.  A total of 35 student-athletes have made commitments to the two-year old varsity Storm program that went 3-8 in 2008 as a first-year varsity competitor, as well as a first-year NCAA Division II provisional member.

"We are excited to have a great mix of local standouts and great players from around the region," said McNellie. "We feel this class addresses our potential needs and allows us to continue building quality depth across the board. We are still working on several impact players who could bolster this already strong group."

Lake Erie is currently awaiting full approval into Division II, in addition to approval into the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC), which could come as early as June.

Following is a list of the 35 student-athletes who have committed to Lake Erie College for the 2009-10 academic year:

"Jordan is an outstanding quarterback with huge upsides. He should provide competition at the QB spot, but is capable of playing a variety of positions."

Schyler Chappell     Kirtland HS     OL
"Schyler was a two-way standout for Kirtland High School. He's a solid technician with a mean streak and will compete for a spot on the offensive line."

Tyler Collins     Eastlake North HS     LB
"Tyler is a rangy local defensive standout who makes plays on defense. He should compete at the outside linebacker position."

Devon Coman     Akron North HS     RB/DB
"Devon is a multi-talented prospect who has highlights on both sides of the ball. He will be expected to make an impact as an offensive skill guy."

Jevon Cook     Brush HS     DB
"Jevon is a quick and athletic defensive back. He has outstanding coverage and ball skills. He makes plays on defense and is also an outstanding wrestler."

Donta Covington     Akron North HS     RB/DB
"Donta is an athlete. He could be a factor at a number of positions. He's excelled as a running back, receiver, defensive back and kick returner."

Bill Desiderio     Iroquois Central (N.Y.)     LB
"Bill is a physical, hard-nosed linebacker. He enjoys playing defense. He will compete at inside linebacker positions."

Brendan Gallagher     Aurora HS     QB
"Brendan is another outstanding quarterback with many intangibles. He led Aurora High School to a State Championship while playing on a torn ACL. He's a tough, gritty leader."

"Mark is a play-making linebacker. He runs very well and finds a way to the football. He could compete at all of the linebacker slots."

Zane Huston     Bellvue HS     DL
"Zane is a versatile defensive football player. He's excelled as both linebacker and defensive lineman and fits well with Lake Erie's defensive scheme."

Cody Kaser     Wooster Tri-Way HS     OL
"Cody is an outstanding offensive lineman that plays big. He has the size and the ability to compete for time on the Storm offensive line."

Ricky Kaydo     Edgewood HS     WR
"Ricky is a versatile wide receiver. He runs great routes and has the size to give some defenses match-up problems. He also catches the ball well in traffic."

"Jordan is a talented, local running back prospect. He led Madison High School to State Playoffs as a senior. He runs with power, as well as speed. He should be a good fit in the Lake Erie offense."
