ASHLAND, OHIO – Host Ashland University scored just seconds into the contest and broke open the game with a huge third quarter en route to an 87-17 victory over the Lake Erie College football team in the 2010 season finale Saturday (Nov. 13) at Jack Miller Stadium in Ashland.
Joe Horn scored six touchdowns and Ashland (8-3, 7-3 GLIAC) outscored the Storm 42-0 in the third quarter on its way to winning its seventh in a row to close the season. Lake Erie (3-8, 3-7 GLIAC), which turned the ball over seven times, had its three-game winning streak snapped.
Horn returned the opening kickoff 93 yards for a touchdown, but Lake Erie responded with a nine-play, 67-yard drive to tie the game at 7-7 on a one-yard run by redshirt sophomore quarterback Matt Krumpak (McDonald, Ohio/McDonald).
D.J. McCoy and Rocco Pentello scored on runs of two and eight yards, respectively, to put Ashland up 21-7. The Storm answered back when Krumpak connected with sophomore Andre Wells (Cleveland, Ohio/Villa Angela-St. Joseph) on a 79-yard score, the longest pass play in Lake Erie history, near the end of the first quarter to make it 21-14.
Taylor Housewright threw a pair of touchdown passes to Horn in the second quarter and Gregg Berkshire kicked a 19-yard field goal to give the Eagles a 38-14 lead. Sophomore Cameron Whitner's (Westerville, Ohio/Olentangy Liberty) school-record tying 84-yard interception return set up sophomore Sam Marcotte (Chardon, Ohio/Chardon) for a 23-yard field goal right before halftime, making the score 38-17 at the break.
Lake Erie got the ball to start the second half, but Phil Galska broke through to block the Storm punt and recovered the ball in the endzone to extend the lead to 45-17. The rest of the quarter belonged to Horn as he caught a pair of touchdown passes and scored on a 16-yard reverse to put Ashland ahead, 66-17.
Justen White-Reid broke up the middle for a 40-yard run and then scored on an 18-yard scamper in the last five minutes of the third quarter to make it 80-17.
Quenten Scott capped the scoring with a 27-yard interception return with just over 10 minutes remaining.
Krumpak, making his second straight start in place of injured junior Sean Bedevelsky (Brunswick, Ohio/Brunswick), completed 13-of-31 passes for 165 yards and the touchdown to Wells. He was intercepted three times. Wells rushed for 45 yards on four carries in addition to his 79-yard catch. Brandon James (Mentor, Ohio/Mentor) led the Storm with three receptions.
