White Team Prevails in Spring Game, 17-14

PAINESVILLE, Ohio-- The Lake Erie College football concluded its spring practice schedule with its annual Green-White Spring Game at the Jack Britt Memorial Stadium in Painesville Saturday (April 20). The White Team captured in the win in the intersquad scrimmage, 17-14. 

The White Team got on the board first in the second quarter. After a large gain on a Shane VanFleteren (Shelby, Mich./Utica) reception down the sideline, Anthony Elias (Cortland, Ohio/Lakeview) punched it in for the game's first score. The following B.J. Rhodes (Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio/ Cuyahoga Falls) extra-point gave the White Team a 7-0 lead. 

Anthony Bilal (Painesville, Ohio/Riverside) responded for the Green Team with a big run down the middle the following play. Brendan Gallagher (Aurora, Ohio/Aurora) took a fourth-and-goal run into the endzone a couple of plays later to tie the game at seven. 

With less than ten seconds remaining in the first-half, Mitchel Hokavar (Perry, Ohio/Perry) hit Shane Vanfleteren in the corner of the endzone to give the White Team a 14-7 lead. 

After the White Team was forced to punt on their first possession of the second half, R.J. Karam (Copley, Ohio/Copley) forced a Green Team fumble which was recovered by Ramon Alexander (West Bloomfield, Mich./Walled Lake). Alexander also had an interception in the first half. The turnover led to a Rhodes field goal to increase the lead to 17-7. 

Ryan Bitzer (Chagrin Falls, Ohio/Orange) hit Billy Croom (Columbus, Ohio/Beechcroft) for a huge pass down the sideline to start the fourth quarter for the Green Team but were unable to convert on a fourth down and turned the ball over.

With six minutes left in the fourth quarter, Brent Gibbs (Almont, Mich./Almont) led the Green Team down the field, scoring on a Croom reception to bring the score to 17-14.

The Green Team stopped the White Team on the following possession to get the ball back with 1:30 left. However, the White Team was able to stop the Green Team in four downs, with two sacks from Kyle Herth (Harrison, Ohio/LaSalle) to seal the win. 

The Storm take the field for the first time in the 2013 season on Thursday, September 5, when they play host to nonconference rival Gannon University in the annual Ship's Wheel Trophy Game.
