Storm Drop Road Contest to Michigan Tech

HOUGHTON, MICH-- The Lake Erie College men's basketball team opened up 2013 with a 66-48 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference loss at Michigan Tech University on Thursday (Jan. 3).

Ali Haidar led the way for the Huskies (9-2, 6-1 GLIAC) with 24 points coming on 10-of-14 (71%) shooting from the field and a game high 10 rebounds and four blocks.

The Storm (4-6, 1-5 GLIAC) kept the game close in the first half, trailing the Huskies by one going into the break. Lake Erie hit five-of-seven (71.4%) three-point attempts. Junior Nate Tait (South Euclid, Ohio/Brush/Alderson-Broaddus) hit both of his three-point attempts off the bench. Junior Riley Thomas (Cardington, Ohio/Cardington-Lincoln) led the Storm with nine points in the half. Overall the Storm shot 50% from the field (12-of-24).

The Huskies clamped down on defense in the second half, holding the Storm to just five-of-27 (18.5%) shooting from the field and one-of-eight (12.5%) from beyond the arch. The Huskies hit 42.1% of their shots (eight-of-19) from the field in the second half and converted 14-of-16 (87.5%) of their free-throw attempts to pick up the 66-48 GLIAC win.

Thomas led the Storm with 13 points. Junior Rich Austin (Cleveland, Ohio/St. Ignatius) picked up six points and collected a team-high seven rebounds. Junior Garrick Sims (Barberton, Ohio/Barberton) returned to the lineup for Lake Erie scoring four points and grabbing four boards off the bench. Tait finished the game with eight points off the bench.

The Storm hit 33.3% (17-of-51) of shots from the floor, including six-of-15 (40%) from beyond the arch.

Haidar's double-double led the Huskies as four players scored in double figures- Haidar (24), Austin Armga (14), Phil Romback (13) and Ben Stelzer (12). The Huskies shot 50% from the floor in the game (20-of-40) and converted 21-of-24 (87.5%) free-throw attempts. Michigan Tech owned a slight lead in rebounds, 30-27.

The Storm return to action on Saturday (Jan. 5) as they conclude their trip up north as they visit Northern Michigan University in Marquette, Mich. Tipoff is scheduled for 1:00 pm.
