Storm Relinquish First-Half Lead, Fall to Walsh
NORTH CANTON, Ohio—The Lake Erie College men's baskeball team were unable to hold onto their 41-37 halftime lead as they fell in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference South Division play to Walsh University 87-76 in North Canton, Ohio on Saturday (Jan. 12).
Rian Burrell led the way for the Walsh Cavaliers (9-4, 5-4 GLIAC) with a game-high 27 points, five rebounds and four assists.
The Storm (5-8, 2-7 GLIAC) jumped out to a 5-2 lead early in the first half before the Cavaliers tied the game at nine. The teams exchanged points until the 11:55 mark in the first when Try Howard's (Lima, Ohio/Lima Shawnee) second straight basket put the Storm in front 20-18. Lake Erie held the lead until Walsh once again tied the game up at 29 apiece. A Tom Parker (Cleveland, Ohio/St. Ignatius) three-pointer put the Storm back in front with six to play in the half. The Storm maintained the advantage in the final six minutes of the half, taking a 41-37 lead into the break.
Howard led the Storm with eight points in the half off of the bench while Nate Tait (South Euclid, Ohio/Brush-Alderson-Broaddus) scored seven in a reserve role. Overall, the Storm bench outscored the Cavalier's bench 15-7 in the first half. The Storm shot 56.2% (18-of-32) from the floor in the first half, including four-of-nine (44.4%) from the three-point line.
The Storm increased their lead by as much as 10 in the second half before Walsh started to mount a comeback. Down 55-45, the Cavaliers went on a 14-4 run to tie the game at 59 with ten minutes to play. Walsh ultimately took the lead at 65-63 with 7:51 left in the second-half and they would not relinquish that lead as they outscored the Storm 22-13 in the final minutes to pick up the 87-76 win.
Howard led the Storm with a career-high 14 points off the bench and grabbed three rebounds. Garrick Sims (Barberton, Ohio/Barberton) scored 13 points and collected a team-high five rebounds. Jamil Dudley (Massillon, Ohi0/Massillon) scored 12 points on five-of-seven (71%) shooting from the floor including two-of-three from beyond the arch. Roy Alexander (Calumbus, Ohio/Walnut Ridge) scored 10 points in his second career start.
Lake Erie finished the game shooting 53.2% (33-of-62) from the field but only had seven attempts from the free-throw line in the game. The Storm had a season-low one steal in the contest and were outrebounded 34-26.
Three Cavaliers scored in double-digits- Burrell (27), Kenny Kornowski (19) and Davonte Beard (14). L.J. Campbell collected five rebounds off the bench to tie Burrell for a team-high.
The Storm return home on Thursday, Jan. 17, to host Hillsdale College at the Jerome T. Osborne Family Athletic and Wellness Center. Tipoff is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
