PAINESVILLE, Ohio— The Lake Erie College men's basketball team erased a second half deficit to send their Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) game against Ashland University into overtime but ultimately fell to the Eagles in the extra session, 87-79, Monday (Feb. 1).

The Eagles got off to a fast start, controlling the tempo early on.  Trailing 34-17, Michael Morris (New Palestine, Ind./New Palestine) got the Storm back on track, hitting a trio of threes to bring the deficit down to 13. However, the Eagles gained momentum down the stretch, taking a 44-28 lead into the half.

Morris led the Storm with 16 points in the opening half, hitting four threes.

The Eagles jumped out to a 20 point advantage, 52-32, before the Storm mounted an epic comeback.  Roy Alexander (Columbus, Ohio/Walnut Ridge) kicked off the run, followed by a basket by Steve Walczak (Columbus, Ohio/Olentangy).

After the media timeout, Alexander hit back-to-back-to-back three-pointers.  After layups by Walczak and Alexander, Collin Barth (Mentor, Ohio/Mentor) hit a deep three-pointer to cap off a 20-0 run and tie the game at 52.  During the run, Alexander scored 13 points.

Following the big run, the teams traded baskets until the Eagles gained a 64-57 edge, but the Storm went on a 6-0 run to bring the game within two points.

In the waning minutes of the half, the Storm trailed 70-66.  Sean Howard (Indianapolis, Ind./Lawrence North) and Trey Howard (Lima, Ohio/Lima Shawnee) hit free-throws to bring the game within one.  The Eagles answered on the other end, increasing their lead to three.

With less than 30 seconds to play in the half, Sean Howard drained a three with ice in his veins to tie the game at 72.  The Eagles had one more shot to win in the game in regulation but the shot went off the front of the rim, sending the game to overtime.

The Eagles struck first in overtime, hitting a pair of free-throws.  Trey Howard brought the lead down to one with a free-throw but the Eagles answered with a field goal.  Morris hit a layup to bring the game within one but once again, the Eagles answered on their possession.

Trey Howard brought the lead to two, 78-76, with a free-throw but that would end the scoring for the Storm as the Eagles made the most of their opportunities at the charity stripe as they wrapped-up the win.

Morris and Trey Howard had 20 points apiece and combined for 13 rebounds.  Trey Howard also had four assists. Alexander finished with 16 points with six rebounds and three steals.  Sean Howard had 10 points.  Walczak had seven points and seven rebounds.  Andy Bosley (Columbus, Ohio/Orange) had seven rebounds.

The Storm committed 10 turnovers while forcing 18.  Those turnovers led to 19 points.

Lake Erie is on the road Thursday (Feb. 4) at Malone University.
