Pioneers Win Close Game Against Storm

CANTON, Ohio— The Lake Erie College men's basketball team fell in a close battle at Malone University, 73-68, Thursday (Feb. 4) in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) action.

The Storm jumped out to an early 6-2 lead but the Pioneers chipped away, gaining a 9-8 advantage at the first media timeout.  A small run by the Storm knotted the game at 11 but the Pioneers scored back-to-back threes to pull ahead, 17-11, with under ten to play in the opening half. 

The Pioneers lead dwindled as a three by Michael Morris (New Palestine, Ind./New Palestine) gave the Storm the lead, 22-21, with six-and-a-half minutes to play.  The teams went back-and-forth down the stretch of the opening half as the Pioneers had a small 33-32 lead.

Morris led the Storm with eight first-half points.  Sean Howard (Indianapolis, Ind./Lawrence North) had seven points while Trey Howard (Lima, Ohio/Lima Shawnee) had five.  The Storm shot 44.8% (13-of-39) in the frame.

The Pioneer lead grew to six in the first five minutes of the second half but the Storm quickly caught up, gaining a 46-45 lead with just over12 minutes to play.  The lead was short lived as the Pioneers answered with an 8-0 run.

The Storm regained their footing, lowering the gap to two, 61-59, with under five minutes to play.  They pulled within one, 63-62 with three minutes to play.  However, this was the closest they got as the Pioneers were true from the foul line in the waning minutes, hanging on for the win.

Roy Alexander (Columbus, Ohio/Walnut Grove), Andy Bosley (Columbus, Ohio/Orange) and Morris all ended the game with 11 points.  Bosley and Morris combined for 13 rebounds.  Trey Howard finished with 10 points while Sean Howard netted nine.  Both had three assists.

Overall, the Storm shot 45.0% from the floor (27-of-60).  They forced 11 turnovers, leading to 10 points.  The Storm outscored the Pioneers in the pain 24-20.

The Storm is back in action Saturday (Feb. 6) at home against Walsh University.
