MARQUETTE, MICH. – The Lake Erie College men's golf team opened the 2012-13 season with a tie for seventh-place at the Northern Michigan University Intercollegiate Match Play Saturday and Sunday (Sept. 8-9). The Storm posted a total team record of 14-16 (47%) in the unique match play format, tying Lake Superior State University.
Lake Erie went 7-8 each day. Four of the five Storm golfers posted a 3-3 record at the event, held at the Marquette Golf Club's Greywall Course. Senior Mike Guarino (Mentor, Ohio/Mentor), juniors Jay Shiffbauer (Fairport Harbor, Ohio/Fairport Harbor) and Tyler Walters (Middlefield, Ohio/Cardinal) and freshman Jimmy Wild (Sagamore Hills, Ohio/Trinity) all finished with a .500 winning percentage, splitting their six matches. Freshman Bart Wyss (Salem, Ohio/Salem) went 2-4.
Saginaw Valley University won the event, posting a 20-10 mark (67%), followed by Wayne State University (27-15, 64%).
Individually, Brian Krupo of the University of Wisconsin-Parkside won all six of his matches. Wayne State's Reid Dean was the runner up, going 5-1.
The Storm is off for the next two-plus weeks until the first NCAA Division II Regional event Sept. 30-Oct. 1 in Kansasville, Wisc.
