PAINESVILLE, OHIO – Set in the historic Union Club of downtown Cleveland, the Northeast Ohio Chapter of Financial Executives International (FEI) held their annual awards ceremony April 10 for the area's outstanding business students on. Among the seven outstanding students who were honored was Lake Erie College senior men's lacrosse player Zach Hamelinck (Chittenango, N.Y/Chittenango/Clarkson).  Hamelinck received the award for Outstanding Finance/Accounting Graduate.

"The setting was surreal and almost overwhelming," Hamelinck described, as he sat with his parents and Dean of the School of Business Robert Trebar.

They sat amongst some of the city's most powerful people, in a building which is powerful in its own way, standing strong for over 140 years. Seated in a ballroom, they socialized for awhile and then ate a bountiful dinner just before the presentations began.

Each award winner was recognized with a reading of his or her educational feats, extra-curricular accomplishments and community contributions. Hamelinck, an acomplished student-athlete in the classroom and on the Storm lacrosse team, was presented with a plaque, elegant FEI paperweight and other gifts for his efforts. The other award winners came from other area schools, including Baldwin Wallace College, John Carroll University and Case Western Reserve University.

The event was capped with a presentation by guest speaker Ron Bower of Bower Consulting Group. Bower, an honors graduate of the School for Bank Administration at the University of Wisconsin and a proud graduate of Ohio University, spoke about the importance of networking in the business world. Hamelinck took note of Bower's message and made the effort to connect with him following the presentation, which led to more contacts in the Cleveland financial scene just days after the ceremony.

"I'm very appreciative of the honor and opportunity, and I can definitely see that many more opportunities have been created through this," said Hamelinck. "Assistant Professor of Accounting Julie Ziemak helped me tremendously with this process, developing me and getting my information to FEI, and I thank her for that."

Financial Executives International is a professional association for corporate finance executives with chapters located across the United States and Canada.  FEI members are senior financial officers committed to supporting outstanding local talent who share an interest in the finance and accounting professions.
