Strong Defensive Play Leads Storm Over Pfeiffer

PAINESVILLE, Ohio— The ninth-ranked Lake Erie College lacrosse team defeated 17th-ranked Pfeiffer University 13-4 Saturday (March 19) in nonconference play.

After strong defensive play marked the first 10 minutes of the game, Pfeiffer got on the board with a goal.  In the final thirty seconds, the Storm offense came to life. Lucas Shafer (Hamburg, N.Y./Hamburg) tied the game with 32 seconds to play in the quarter.  Twenty seconds later, Edmond Renaud (Carlisle, Ont./Waterdown District/Pfieffer) gave the Storm a 2-1 lead.  With two seconds left, Shafer found defenseman Kole Robinson (Orchard Park, N.Y./Orchard Park) to give the Storm a 3-1 lead.

Renaud scored his second goal 20 seconds into the second off an assist from Bandon Donohue (South Buffalo, N.Y./Bishop Timon St. Jude).  After Pfeiffer cut the Storm's run short, Courtland Black-Araujo (Bowmanville, Ont./St. Stephen/Onodaga) scored three straight goals, two in man-up situations.  Mitchell Shafer (Hamburg, N.Y./Hamburg), Lucas Shafer and Mitchell Stokes (New Westminster, B.C./New Westminster Secondary) had the assists.  Donohue scored his first goal on a man-down opportunity to give the Storm an 8-2 lead at the half.

The Storm outscored the Falcons 3-0 in the third quarter.  Renaud scored his third goal on Stokes' second assist.  Eight minutes later, Connor Ward (Clarkston, Mich./Clarkston) struck from deep off a pass from Mitchell Shafer.  Jacob Mitchell (York, Pa./Dallastown) followed up with a goal off a pass from Lucas Shafer.

Connor Ryan (Hamburg, N.Y./Hamburg/Adrian) scored his first goal of the season in the fourth off Donohue's second assist.  Renaud ended the scoring for the Storm with his fourth, coming from Lucas Shafer. 

The Falcons got back on the board with 6:05 left to play, their first goal since 12:50 in the second quarter.  They added on more late but it was not enough to overcome the Storm advantage.

Lucas Shafer led the Storm offense with one goal and four assists.  Renaud scored four goals while Black-Araujo had three.  Donohue had a goal and two assists while Stokes and Mitchell Shafer had two assists.  Mitchell, Robinson, Ryan and Ward also scored. 

Robinson caused three turnovers and collected a team-high eight groundballs.  Tyler Smoot (Dublin, Ohio/Dublin Scioto) caused four turnovers and had a pair of groundballs.  Lucas Shafer picked up six groundballs while Renaud had four. 

Tom Lipomi (Hamburg, N.Y./Hamburg) picked up the win in net, making five stops. 

Brett Swan (Acton, Ont./Halton Hills) won 12-of-18 faceoffs, picking up three groundballs.

Overall, the Storm outshot the Falcons 44-17.  The Storm also had the advantage in groundballs, 39-20.

The Storm is back in action Tuesday (March 22) at home against Walsh University in ECAC action.
