Storm Topples Walsh in ECAC Action

PAINESVILLE, Ohio—The eighth-ranked Lake Erie College lacrosse team continued its current homestand with a 15-8 win over Walsh University Tuesday (March 22) in ECAC action.

Lucas Shafer (Hamburg, N.Y./Hamburg) scored the first goal of the game five minutes in.  After the Cavaliers matched it, Courtland Black-Araujo (Bowmanville, Ont./St. Stephen/Onondaga) pushed across a ball that was left on the doorstep after a John Kezerian (Melrose, Mass./Malden School) shot.  Mitchell Shafer (Hamburg, N.Y./Hamburg) increased the lead to two with a goal off an assist by Edmond Renaud (Carlisle, Ont./Waterdown District/Pfeiffer). Walsh scored late in the quarter to cut it to one.

Patrick Bay (Canadaigua, N.Y./Canadaigua Academy) scored his first goal of the season to push the Storm advantage to two.  Black-Araujo scored his second goal of the game off a pass by Mitchell Stokes (New Westminster, B.C./New Westminster Secondary).  The Cavaliers responded 50 seconds later but the Storm added two goals late in the half.  The first was scored by Mitchell Shafer, assisted by Stokes.  Renaud scored his the first goal of the game for the Storm, assisted by Mitchell Shafer.

The Storm offense came alive in the third quarter, outscoring the Cavaliers 7-1 in the frame.  Renaud and Black-Araujo had two goals apiece while Kezerian, Lucas Shafer and Connor Ward (Clarkston, Mich./Clarkston) had one apiece.  Brandon Donohue (South Buffalo, N.Y./Bishop Timon St. Jude), Jacob Mitchell (York, Pa./Dallastown), Renaud and Mitchell Shafer had assists.

The Cavaliers outscored the Storm 4-1 in the fourth but were unable to overcome the Storm lead.

Renaud led the Storm offense with three goals and two assists.  Black-Araujo scored a team-high four goals.  Mitchell Shafer had two goals and three assists while Lucas Shafer had three goals.  Bay, Kezerian and Ward had a goal apiece.  Stokes had two assists while Donohue and Mitchell had one.

Zach Burening (Lancaster, N.Y./Lancaster) caused five turnovers and had two groundballs.  Renaud caused three with five groundballs.  Lucas Shafer collected four groundballs.

Tom Lipomi (Hamburg, N.Y./Hamburg) picked up the win in net, making six saves.

Brett Swan (Acton, Ont./Halton Hills) went 15-of-20 on faceoffs with eight groundballs.

The Storm is back at home Friday (March 25) to wrap-up its five-game homestand against Alderson-Broaddus University in ECAC play.
