Notre Dame Drops Lake Erie in Home Opener

PAINESVILLE, Ohio—Notre Dame College (2-0) won its 21st straight contest, dropping the Storm (1-2) 3-0 in their home opener at Jack Britt Memorial Stadium in Painesville, Ohio.

The Falcons offense pressured the Storm in the first half.  Notre Dame's Elliot Kelly nearly broke the stalemate at the ten minute mark with a shot from five yards out, but freshman goalkeeper Filip Ljubevski (Ajax, Ont./Pikering) made an excellent save to keep the game scoreless.  Lake Erie senior Jake Shelton (Newburg, Md./Webber International University) shot came close to putting the Storm on the board at the 20 minute mark, but his shot missed wide.  Notre Dame picked up the first goal of the game at the 24 minute mark, as Tom Owens floated a ball over the head of Ljubevski inside the far post, to put the Falcons up 1-0.  The Storm nearly tied the game up at the 32 minute mark, as freshman Ryan Gibson (Dublin, Ohio/Dublin Scotio) put a header overtop of the Notre Dame net off a corner from junior Stewart Bath (Billingham, England/Billingham Campus School/Averett).  Ljubesvki ended the first half with four saves.

Notre Dame added to their lead early in the second half off the foot off Owens, his second of the game.  The Storm put pressure on the Falcons throughout the half, but was unable to find the back of the net.  Renan Trocoli added a third goal for Notre Dame in the final minute of play to seal the win.

Ljubevski ended the game with nine saves for the Storm.

Lake Erie returns to action on Tuesday (Sept. 11th) at nonconference opponent Urbana University (2-2) in Urbana, Ohio, slated for a 4 p.m. start.
