PAINESVILLE, Ohio—The Lake Erie College men's soccer team ended their 2012 season on Sunday (Oct. 28) with a 2-0 win against Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference foe Malone University on Senior Day at The Britt in Painesville.
The Storm (6-12-0, 5-8 GLIAC) picked up the first goal of the game in the seventh minute when senior Jake Shelton (Newburg, Md./Webber International University) scored his first goal of the season off a pass from Stewart Bath ( Billingham, England/Billingham Campus School/Averett) to put the Storm up 1-0. Storm goalie Filip Ljubesvki made a pair of key saves in the 16th minute to keep the Pioneers (6-8-2, 6-6-1 GLIAC) off the board in the first half.
Shelton added a second goal in the 74th minute, assisted by classmate Gary Carr (Dubin, Ireland) to put the Storm ahead 2-0. Adam Sharpnack converted on a penalty kick for Malone in the 86th minute, but it was not enough, as the Storm concluded their season with a 2-1 win.
Jake Shelton led the Storm on offense with his two goals on four shots. Ljubevski tallied three saves in the win.
The Storm end the 2012 season with a 6-12-0 overall and 5-8-0 GLIAC record. Stefan Martin (Surrey, England) led the Storm with five goals in the season. Anthony Novak (Toronto, Ont./St. Mary Catholic) and Cory Bucur (Bedford, Ohio/St. Peter Chanel), and Shelton recorded three and two goals respectively. Ryan Gibson (Dublin, Ohio/Dublin Scioto), James Grogan (Leed, England/Averett University), and Robert Vallerelo (Chardon, Ohio/Chardon) also contributed a goal. Bath led the team with two assists while Luke Hobbs (Yarm, England/Conyers School), Gibson, Carr and Novak tallied an assist apiece. Filip Ljubevski led the Storm with 83 saves and six wins.
