PAINESVILLE, Ohio—The Lake Erie College men's soccer team is set for a showdown at Jack Britt Memorial Stadium Friday (Sept. 13) with the 2012 national runner-up and preseason conference favorite Saginaw Valley State at 4:00 p.m. to open up 2013 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) play.
The Storm (1-0-1) is coming off of back-to-back double overtime games to open the 2013 season. In 219 minutes of play this season the Storm have yet to surrender a goal, with goalkeepers Sam Etherton (Alliance, Ohio/Alliance) and Filip Ljubevski (Ajax, Ontario/Pickering) combining to make 16 saves.
Alfred Majer (Mentor, Ohio/Mentor) leads the Storm's offense thus far this season, recording the game-winning goal in the second overtime in Lake Erie's win over Seton Hill University last Sunday (Sept. 8).
Saginaw Valley State (0-1-1) has also started the season with a pair of double-overtime games, but was unable to come away with a win. The Cardinals fell to Lewis University 3-2 in their season opener and picked up a draw against the University of Wisconsin-Parkside.
Last season, Saginaw Valley State posted an 18-3-4 overall record, winning the GLIAC North Division and Conference Tournament titles. The Cardinals put together a 14-game unbeaten streak to reach the National Championship game before falling to Lynn University 3-2. The Cardinals entered the 2013 season ranked as high as second nationally
The Storm is also in action at home this Sunday (Sept. 15), playing host to GLIAC foe Northwood University at 3:30 pm.
