PAINESVILLE, Ohio-- The Lake Erie College men's soccer team suffered their first loss of the season in their 2013 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) opener against 2012 national runner-up and preseason conference favorite Saginaw Valley State University, 3-0, on Friday (Sept. 13) in Painesville.
The Cardinals (1-1-1, 1-0 GLIAC) got on the board first when Lachlan Savage got past the Storm (1-1-1, 0-1 GLIAC) defense in the 12th minute. Saginaw Valley controlled the tempo throughout the first-half, outshooting the Storm 11-3. Lake Erie goalkeeper Filip Ljubevski (Ajax, Ontario/Pikering) made three saves in the first-half.
Saginaw Valley continued to push the pace in the second-half as Conor Reaume and Jordan Kalk added goals to secure the Cardinal victory.
Sam Etherton (Alliance, Ohio/Alliance) made three saves in net for the Storm in the second-half.
Aaron Gerwig picked up the win for the Cardinals, making two saves.
The Storm is back in action at home Sunday (Sept. 15), playing host to GLIAC foe Northwood University at 3:30 p.m.
