PAINESVILLE, Ohio-- For the third time in four games to start the 2013 season, the Lake Erie College men's soccer team found themselves in overtime. Less than four minutes into the extra period, Alfred Majer (Mentor, Ohio/Mentor) got inside the Northwood University box and scored the game-winning goal to give the Storm the 1-0 victory in a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) contest on Sunday (Sept. 15).
The teams were even throughout the first half. The Storm (2-1-1, 1-1 GLIAC) held a slight 8-6 advantage in shots. Both Storm goalkeeper Filip Ljubevski (Ajax, Ont./Pikering) and Timerberwolves (0-2, 0-1 GLIAC) goalkeeper Johannes Sterobo made three saves in the half.
Once again, neither team was able to find the back of the net in the second-half. Cory Bucur (Bedford, Ohio/St. Peter Chanel) nearly put the Storm on the scoreboard with five seconds remaining but his shot went over the top of the crossbar. Northwood owned a small advantage in shots for the half, 11-10. Lujubevski made four saves in the half while Sterbobo had three.
Less than four minutes into the extra session, Majer got the ball in the Northwood box. After juking the Timberwolves defender, Majer got a shot passed Sterbobo in the low post, farside to give the Storm the overtime victory.
The goal was Majer's second of the season and the second time he scored the game-winner in overtime. Ljubesvki made seven saves in net for the Storm to earn the clean sheet.
The Storm return to action next Friday (Sept. 20) on the road to face the University of Findlay in GLIAC action.
