Big Innings Lift Malone Past Storm

CANTON, Ohio-- The Lake Erie College softball team were unable to come away from Canton, Ohio with a win as Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) foe Malone University swept the Storm in a doubleheader Monday (April 15), 8-2 and 10-1.

In game one, both teams were scoreless until the bottom of the fourth when Malone (8-18, 2-12 GLIAC) broke the game open. Katy Carr led off the inning by reaching second base on a fielding error before being advanced to third on a Alexa Holztrager single. Following an Emily Isla single to load the bases, Amy Donze brought everybody home on a grandslam.

Mackenzie Quinn (Ypisilanti, Mich./Milan) responded for the Storm (2-24, 0-16 GLIAC) the following frame, leading off with a solo homerun to cut the deficit to 4-1. However, Malone added three more runs in the fifth on three hits to increase their lead to 7-1. The Storm threatened in the top of the sixth when Jeniffer Gratz (Richwood, Ohio/North Union) and Meredith Scholle (Ada, Mich./Forest Hills Central) hit back-to-back singles up the middle with two outs but Pioneers pitcher Shelby Snyder struck out her eighth batter of the game to end the inning.

With two outs in the seventh, Olivia Gilmour (Garfield, Ohio/Trinity) reached second on an error. After Amber Dowen (New Lyne, Ohio/Pymatuning Valley) walk, Courtney Hawk (New Lebanon, Ohio/Dixie) loaded the bases with a single. Gilmour then scored on a wild pitch but it was not enough as the Storm dropped game one.

Snyder picked up the win on the mound for Malone, striking out eight and allowing just one earned run on five hits.

The Storm struck first in game two. Morgan Studd (Wakeman, Ohio/Wakeman Reserve) led off the bottom of the third with a double. With two outs, Kyleah Burton-Smiles (Columbus, Ohio/Grandview Heights) singled through the left side, scoring Studd. The lead did not last long though, as the Pioneers scored two runs in the top of the fourth. After a scoreless fifth inning, Malone posted eight runs in the top of the sixth and held the Storm off the board in the bottom of the frame to pick up the win in six innings.

Studd led the Storm with a double and a run while Burton-Smiles had a single and a RBI. Gratz and Scholle also doubled for the Storm while Hawk had a single.

Holztrager led the Pioneers' offense with a grandslam in the sixth inning. Amy Donze picked up the win on the mound for Malone, allowing one run and five hits while striking out 12.

The Storm return to action Saturday, April 20, when they travel to the University of Findlay for a GLIAC doubleheader.
