Storm Splits on Opening Day

CLERMONT, Fl. – The Lake Erie College softball team opened their 2018 campaign with a split of their double header as they defeated American International 4-3, but fell to Davenport, 4-3.

In game one the Storm jumped out to an early lead in the bottom of the first inning.  Savannah Karako (Fairport Harbor, Ohio / Lake Catholic) doubled into the right center gap with two outs.  A single by Allyson Hajnosz (Lordstown, Ohio / Lordstown) moved Karako to third, and a single from Kaitlyn Peacock (Hebron, Ohio / Lakewood) drove in Karako, to give Lake Erie a 1-0 lead.  The Storm added to their lead in the bottom of the third when Hajnosz doubled to the right center gap to bring home Karako who singled earlier in the inning.  American International tied the game with a pair of runs in the fifth.  The Storm answered back when Marissa Rizzo (Northfield Center, Ohio / Nordonia) got the bottom of the fifth going with a single.  The next batter up Karako hit a two run homerun to right field, to give the Storm a 4-2 lead at the end of five innings.  American International cut into the Lake Erie lead with a run in the top of the sixth.  Ashley Brown (Dayton, Ohio / Carlisle) closed the door on American International in the top of the seventh, and the Storm won, 4-3.  Allyson Deemer (Poland, Ohio / Poland Seminary) started game one for the Storm as she was perfect through her first four innings of work.  Deemer pitched five innings, allowed two runs on three hits.

The second game started as a pitchers battle. Parker Viele (Byron, Mi) was in the circle for the Storm as she navigated her way through two scoreless innings.  The Panthers broke the scoring drought with a pair of runs in the bottom of the third, to take a 2-0 lead.  After a scoreless fourth inning Lake Erie was able to push across one run, and cut the Davenport lead to 2-1.  The inning got started when Chloe Allen (Lebanon, Ohio / Lebanon) reached on an error, and Rizzo walked.  The next batter Karako singled up the middle and plated Allen for the Storm.  Lake Erie tied the game in the top of the sixth when Jennifer Doershuk (Streesboro, Ohio / Kent Roosevelt) singled up the middle to plated Peacock as she led off the inning with a single.  The teams were tied 2-2 at the end of seven innings, and the game went to extra innings.  The Storm grabbed the lead in the top of the eighth when Kristin Peacock (Hebron, Ohio / Lakewood) reached on a sacrifice bunt, and a bad throw plated Ka. Peacock to give the Storm a 3-2 edge.  The Panthers rallied in the bottom of the eighth and won the game, 4-3.
