PAINESVILLE, OHIO – Freshman Daniel Torres (Chihuahua, Mexico) became the first Lake Erie College swimmer to earn the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Men's Swimming Athlete of the Week award, the league office announced Monday (Jan. 31).
Torres posted an NCAA Provisional Qualifying time and two individual wins at the Notre Dame (Ohio) College Quad on Friday. Torres' "B" cut time of 1:55.53 in the 200 individual medley bested his top time coming into the meet by more than two seconds and fell below the 1:56.79 standard. The highlight came with a lightning fast 21.56 second split in the free portion of the IM. Torres was not done on the day as he also won his other individual event, the 100 yard butterfly, in 52:46. It was his first swim in the 100 butterfly this season.
"Dan had a couple of very strong races on Friday and it's nice to see him honored for them," said Head Coach Nicole Rose. "He's been working all year towards the NCAA cut times and now that he's got the first we think he can reach a few more."
This honor is the second for a Storm athlete this winter and third overall in the College's first year as a member for the GLIAC. Torres is the first true freshman to win the award in men's swimming this season.
Lake Erie will be in action next at the GLIAC Championships on Feb. 9-12.
