PAINESVILLE, OHIO – The Lake Erie College men's and women's swimming teams participated in the 2012 Saint Leo Relays to wrap up its Winter Break Florida Training Trip.
The men's squad finished third in the relays with 86 points narrowly ahead of area rival Wheeling Jesuit University with 82 points in a meet which featured Pfeiffer University as well as first place St. Leo. The women's squad finished fourth with 46 points.
The highlight of the relay, which featured 10 three and four-person relays on both the men's and women's sides, was the men's 800-yard freestyle relay. Sophomore Julian Milinkovskyi (Ukraine) and freshmen Ivan Cizmar (Zagreb, Croatia), Nicky Buckel (New Orleans, La./Holy Cross), and David Thieshen (Bethal Park, Pa./Bethel Park) combined to finish in 7:41.98, setting a new school record by nearly nine seconds.
The Storm men had three other second place finishes. They swam the 300-yard Butterfly Relay in 2:43.19 (freshman Cole Leonberg (Freedom, Pa./Freedom), Cizmar and Thieshen), the 400-yard medley relay in 3:37.90 (Leonberg, Cizmar, Thieshen, Milinkovskyi) and the 500-yard freestyle relay in 4:32.86 (senior Nick Brown (Mentor, Ohio/Mentor), Leonberg, Cizmar, Milinkovskyi).
The Storm women were highlighted by a pair of second place finishes. Lake Erie sophomores Lauren Menicucci (Reno, Nev./Reno), Casey Wendall (Lafayette, Ind./McCutcheon) and freshman Andy Armstrong (Troy, Ohio/Troy) swam the 300-yard breaststroke relay in 3:54.71 and were joined by senior Chelsea Giesen (Grand Pass, Ore./North Valley) in the 500-yard freestyle relay with a time of 5:14.64.
The second half of Lake Erie's season begins Friday, January 13 at Ashland.
