DELEWARE, OHIO—The Lake Erie College men's and and women's swimming teams dominated the Ohio Wesleyan University Corbiere/Merion Invitational this weekend in Delaware, Ohio (Nov. 17-18) with both teams coming in first-place in a field of six schools while setting several Meek Pool and Lake Erie records.
The men (6-1 dual, 2-0 GLIAC) scored a total of 880 points, 274 points better than second-place University of Mount Union, while the women (2-5 dual, 1-1 GLIAC) scored 805 points, 23 ahead of host school Ohio Wesleyan University.
Ivan Cizmar's (Zagreb, Croatia/ X. Gimnazija Ivan Supek) winning time of 1:57.86 in the 200-meter backstroke was an A cut for the NCAA and his time in the 400-meter individual medley (4:03.11) was good for a B cut. Two other Storm men hit B cut qualifying times in the 400 IM with Julian Milinkovskyi (Zaporizhia, Ukraine/Academical Laceum of Zaporizhia) and Denys Fedorchenko (Zaporozhye, Ukraine/Collegium of Zaporizhia No. 98) hitting the provisional qualifying mark along with Cizmar.
Overall, Milinkovskyi led the men with four first place finishes, winning the 100-meter (57.97) and 200-meter (2:09.14) breaststrokes and the 200-meter (1:56.24) and 400-meter (4:01.54) individual medleys. His time in the 100-breast set a Meek Pool record. Fedorchenko, meanwhile, picked up three first-place finishes, coming in the 200-meter (1:43.10), 500-meter (4:38.08) and 1650-meter (16:27.29) freestyle events and also took third in the 400-IM. His time in the 1650 set a school and Meek pool record while his time in the 500 also was a pool record. In addition to the 200-backstroke, Cizmar also won the 100-meter backstroke (52.20). He also took second in the 400 IM and third in the 100 butterfly.
Freshman Yan Milinkovskyi (Zaporizhia, Ukraine/Academical Laceum of Zaporizhia) won the 50-meter freestyle (22:00) and 200-meter butterfly (1:57.86) and took second in the 100-meter butterfly with a time of 51.02, which broke his own school record. Sophomore David Thieshen (Bethal Park, Pa./Bethal Park) took second in the 200-fly and freshman Bryce Wood (Ashland, Ohio/Ashland) took second in the 500-free and third in the 1650-free. Gabriel Green (Glibert, Ariz./Mesquite), Nickolas Garcia (Saginaw, Mich./Saginaw), Christoffer Likens (Oregon, Ohio/Clay) and Nicky Buckel (New Orleans, La./Holy Cross) also collected points for the men.
As a team, the Storm men won four relay events and took third in another, seeing contributions from freshmen Patrick Goelz (South Park, Pa./South Park) and Jordan Kreumpelman (Westerville, Ohio/St. Charles Prepatory). Goelz, Julian Milinkovskyi, Yan Milinkovskyi, and Fedorchenko set a Meek Pool and Lake Erie record with in the 400-free relay with a time of 3:12.64. The Milinkovskyis, Federchenko and Cizmar's 800-meter freesytle relay time of 7:04.72 set both a Lake Erie and Meek Pool record, and Cizmar, Julian Milinkovskyi, Fedorchenko and Goelz set a Meek Pool record with their time of 3:32.42 in the 400 medley relay.
Lauren Menicucci (Reno, Nev./Reno) had a big day by winning three events for the Storm women. She placed first in the 200-meter breaststroke (2:26.17) and both the 200- (2:12.55) and 400- (4:46.85) IM's . She also took third in the 100-back with a time of 1:02.79. Her times in the 100-back and 200-breast set Lake Erie marks and her 200-IM and breast times set Meek Pool records. Freshman Brittany Funk (Turlock, Calif./John H. Pittman) also had a solid outing for the Storm. Funk took first in the 500 (5:29.20) and 1650 (18:49.15) free and the 200 fly (2:17.94), as well as taking second in the 400 IM. Her 1650 time broke the current Lake Erie record. Jennifer Scholl (Kentwood, Mich./East Kentwood) took first in the 200 free (2:00.55), second in the 100 fly and 100 free and third in the 200 fly. Scholl's time of 1:00.85 in the 100 fly set a new Lake Erie record. Casey Wendall (Lafayette, Ind./McCutcheon) took second in both the 200 fly and 1650 free and took third in the 500 free. Kelsey McCormick (Marysville, Mich./Marysville) picked up second place finishes in the 500 and 200 free. Ashley Rand (Uniontown, Ohio/Uniontown) took second in the 50 free andCourtney Freed (St. George, Utah/Desert Hills) took third in the 400 IM. Adrienne Hallett(Wauseon, Ohio/Wauseon), Andy Armstrong (Troy, Ohio/Troy) and Michelle Kinney (Toldeo, Ohio/Maumee) also recorded points for the women.
The Storm women were strong in their relays, picking up one win, two second place finishes and a third place finish. Freshmen Joelyith Humpe (Rayland, Ohio/Wheeling Central Catholic) and Martha Ruether (Allegany, N.Y./Allegany-Limestone Central) contributed on the relays. The 400 free relay team of Scholl, Humpe, Rand, and McCormick set a Lake Erie record with a time of 3:49.40, the 800 free relay team of Scholl, Rand, Wandell, and McCormick set a school record with a time of 8:23.98, and Funk, Menicucci, Scholl, and McCormick set a school record with their time of 4:15.40 in the 400 medley relay.
Wilmington College, Urbana University, and Defiance College also competed.
The Storm men return on Dec. 1-2 to swim at the Kenyon Total Performance Invitational.
