NEW TAMPA, FLORIDA-- The Lake Erie College men's and women's swimming teams performed well at the New Tampa Relay Meet on Friday, January 4th, in Florida with the men winning five events and the women winning one.
The Storm competed with Susquehanna University and West Virginia Wesleyan.
The men won five events overall and took second-place in four. Ivan Cizmar (Zagreb, Croatia), Denys Fedorchenko (Zaporozhye, Ukraine/Collegium of Zaporizhia No. 98) and Jordan Krumpelman (Westerville, Ohio/St. Charles Preparatory) picked up the first win for the Storm in the 300 Backstroke Relay with a time of 2:47.41. Julian Milinkovskyi (Ukraine), Nickolas Garcia (Saginaw, Mich./Saginaw) and David Thieshen (Bethal Park, Pa./Bethel Park) won the Breaststroke Relay (3:18.12) while Yan Milinkovskyi (Zaporozhye, Ukraine/Academical Laceum of Zaporizhia) Gabriel Green (Gilbert, Az/Mesquite) and Fedorchenko won the Fly Relay (2:49.62).
The Storm won two freestyle relays as well- 500 Freestyle Cresnecdo (4:29.71) and the 1500 Freestyle Scramble (5:28.81). Nicky Buckel (New Orleans, La./Holy Cross), Bryce Wood (Ashland, Ohio/Ashland), J. Milinkovskyi, Krumpelman, Fedorchenko and Cizmar led the Storm in the freestyle events.
The Storm men took second-place finishes in four events- 200 Freestyle Relay (Y. Milinkovskyi, Fedorchenko, Wood, Garcia), Fly Relay (Cizmar Buckel, Thieshen), 500 Freestyle Crescendo (Patrick Goelz (South Park, Pa./South Park) , J. Milinkovskyi, Wood, Green) and 4x100 Individual Medley Relay (J. Milinkovskyi, Wood, Y. Milinkovskyi, Garcia).
The women performed well, winning the Breaststroke Relay swam by Lauren Menicucci (Reno, Nev,/Reno), Courtney Freed (St. George, Utah/Desert Hills) and Joelyith Humpe (Rayland, Ohio/Wheeling Central Catholic) with a time of 3:51.36.
The Storm women also picked up seven second-place finishes at the meet, including four in freestyle events (200 Free Relay, 500 Free Crescendo Relay, 1500 Scramble, and 400 Free Relay). Ashley Rand (Uniontown, Ohio/Uniontown), Ashley Armstrong (Troy, Ohio/Troy), Jennifer Scholl (Kentwood, Michigan/East Kentwood), Kelsey McCormick (Marysville, Mich./Marysville), Brittany Funk (Turlock, Calif./John H. Pittman), Menicucci, Freed and Humpe all contributed to the second-place finishes in freestyle events.
Michelle Kinney (Toledo, Ohio/Maumee), Freed, Funk, and Menicucci led the Storm to a second-place finish in the 4x100 individual medley relay with a time of 4:52.33 while Humpe, Menicucci, Scholl, and Rand took second in the 200 Medley with a time of 1:43.43. Scholl, Funk, and Freed took second in the Fly Relay with a time of 3:15.48.
The Storm return to the pool on Friday, January 11, as they travel to nearby Ashland, Ohio for a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference showdown against Ashland University at 5:30 p.m.
