Storm Swimming Concludes Regular Season in Tri-Meet
CALIFORNIA, Pa.--The Lake Erie College swimming teams concluded its 2012-13 regular season schedule competing in California, Pa. on Saturday (Jan. 19) in a tri-meet against the California University (Pa.) and West Virginia Wesleyan College.
The Storm men (7-2, 2-1 GLIAC) defeated West Virginia Wesleyan 158-101 while the women (3-7, 1-2 GLIAC) defeated West Virginia Wesleyan 90-28 but fell to California (Pa.) 85-37.
A trio of Storm men picked three first-place finishes- Denys Fedorchenko (Zaporozhye, Ukraine/Collegium of Zaporizhia No. 98), Yan Milinkovskyi (Zaporozhye, Ukraine/Academical Laceum of Zaporizhia) and Ivan Cizmar (Zagreb, Croatia/X. Gimnazija Ivan Supek). Freshman Fedorchenko took first in the 500-yard (4:45.47) and 1000-yard freestyle (10:06.15) and 200-yard butterfly (1:57.42) while classmate Y. Milinkovskyi won the 100-yard (48.81) and 200-yard freestyle (1:48.72) as well as the 100-yard fly (52.29). Junior Cizmar won the 100-yard (53.94) and 200-yard backstroke (2:02.03) and the 200-yard individual medley (1:58.64). Five other men picked up second-place finishes for the Storm. Sophomores Nick Garcia (Saginaw, Mich./Saginaw) and David Thieshen (Bethal Park, Pa./Bethal Park) took second in the 100-yard and 200-yard breaststroke respectively while freshmen Bryce Wood (Ashland, Ohio/Ashland), Patrick Goelz (South Park, Pa./South Park) and Jordan Krumpelman (Westerville, Ohio/St. Charles Prepatory) took second in the 1000-yard and 50-yard free and 200-yard back respectively.
Cizmar, Thieshen, Y. Milinkovskyi and Denys Fedorchenko combined to win the 200-yard medley relay (1:38.44) while Goelz, Krumpelman, Garcia and Wood won the 200-yard free relay (1:33.35).
Freshmen Kelsey McCormick (Marysville, Mich./Marysville) and Brittany Funk (Turlock, Calif./John H. Pittman) took first-place finishes for the women. McCormick's win came in the 200-yard back (2:30.32) and Funk won the 500-yard free (5:37.64). Freshman Jennifer Scholl (Kentwood, Mich./East Kentwood) and junior Lauren Menicucci (Reno, Nev./Reno) took two second-place finishes apiece. Scholl's came in the 100-yard free and 100-yard fly while Menicucci's came in the 200-yard breast and 200-yard IM. Freshman Joelyith Humpe (Rayland, Ohio/Wheeling Central Catholic) took second in the 200-yard back.
The Storm are off until February 6th as they prep for the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championships in Canton, Ohio.
