Swimming Strong in Season Opener Against Findlay

GENEVA, Ohio-- The Lake Erie College swimming teams kicked off the 2013-14 schedule against Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) foe University of Findlay Saturday (Oct. 12) at SPIRE Institute in Geneva, Ohio.

The Storm men defeated the Oilers 158-100 while the women fell 175-104.

Ilia Platonov (Russia) and Yan Milinkovskyi (Zaporozhye, Ukraine/Academical Laceum of Zaporizhia) led the way for the men, picking up three individual wins apiece. Platanov was victorious in the 50 (22.17), 200 (1:48.46) and 500-yard freestyle (4:59.34) while Y. Milinkovskyi took the 100 (51.65) and 200-yard butterfly (1:59.72) and the 100-yard free (48.10). Ivan Cizmar (Zagreb, Croatia/X. Gimnazija Ivan Supek) took first in the 100-yard backstroke (53.29) and the 200-yard individual medley (2:00.11) in addition to a second-place finish in the 200-yard backstroke (1:55.30). Julian Milinkovskyi (Ukraine) captured first-place finishes in the 100 (58.76) and 200-yard breaststroke (2:07.64). Kaleb Brown (Indiana) picked up second-place finishes in the 50 (22.39) and 100-yard freestyle (50.17). David Thieshen (Bethal Park, Pa./Bethal Park) and Jordan Krumpelman (Westerville, Ohio/St. Charles Prepatory) took second-place in the 1000-yard freestyle (11:31.04) and 500-yard freestyle (5:23.83) respectively.

Cizmar, Y. Milinkovskyi, J. Milinkovskyi and Brown took first place in the 200-yard medley with a time of 1:37.53 while Brown, Thieshen, Krumpelman and Platanov took second in the 400-yard freestyle relay with a time of 3:22.13.

Meri Cizmar (Zagreb, Croatia/X. Gimnazija Ivan Supek) set two individual records in her first collegiate meet. Cizmar set records with first-place finishes in the 100 (1:00.75) and 200-yard backstroke (2:09.66) as well as taking first in the 100-yard butterfly (1:02.37) for three first-place finishes on the day. Jennifer Scholl (Kentwood, Mich./East Kentwood) had the other first-place finish for the Storm women, coming in the 200-yard freestyle (2:04.60). Lauren Meniccuci (Reno, Nev./Reno) had a trio of second-place finishes in the 100 (1:09.60) and 200-yard breaststroke (2:29.11) and the 200-yard IM (2:19.36). Casey Wendall (Lafayette, Ind./McCutcheon) took second in the 200-butterfly (2:19.56) and 500-yard freestyle (5:41.61). Martha Ruether (Allegany, N.Y./Allegany-Limestone) and Brittany Funk (Turlock, Calif./John H. Pittman) took second in the 50 (26.24) and 1000-yard freestyle (11:34.54) respectively.

Cizmar, Menicucci, Scholl and Ashley Rand (Uniontown, Ohio/Uniontown) set a school record in the 200 medley with a time of 1:55.72, which placed them and second. Ruether, Rand, Kelsey McCormick (Marysville, Mich./Marysville) and Joelyith Humpe (Rayland, Ohio/Wheeling Central Catholic) took second in the 400-yard freestyle relay with a time of 3:59.15.

The Storm is back in the pool October 26th, traveling to Tiffin University for a GLIAC duel meet.
