Storm's First Outing is a Close Contest
WHEELING, W.Va. (November 15, 2008) - Lake Erie College made its debut as an NCAA Division II provisional member at the Wheeling Jesuit Classic against the host school. Trailing by as many as 15, the Storm made ground throughout the second half to come within three in the final minutes before losing, 61-57.
Lake Erie began the opening minutes on a scoring drought, falling behind 8-0 until freshman forward Stephanie Rogers (Mentor, Ohio/Mentor) completed a three-point play two minutes into the game, hitting a jumper then sinking a free throw. In the final two minutes of the half, the Storm went on a 10-2 run to end the period down by five at 34-29.
Second-half scoring began with a three-pointer by freshman point guard Britt Busson (Wadsworth, Ohio/Wadsworth) to pull Lake Erie within a basket. The green and white then took its first lead of the game at 15:26 with a jumper by Busson. Lake Erie held the advantage for almost six minutes, before falling behind the remainder of the game. Busson connected on another trey under the two-minute mark to tie the game at 57. A perfect four-for-for from the line in the remaining seconds by Wheeling Jesuit gave the hosts the win.
Busson finished the night with a team-high 18 points, including four 3-pointers. Rogers recorded her first collegiate double double with 13 points and 13 rebounds, while sophomore guard Renese Ames (Bedford, Ohio/Bedford) added 10 points and sophomore forward Alyssa Wagers (Stow, Ohio/Stow) pulled down a game-high 15 rebounds.
Lake Erie (0-1) plays West Liberty at 4 p.m. in second-day action of the Wheeling Jesuit Classic.
