Storm's Shot at Buzzer Doesn't Fall

ASHLAND, Ohio (November 30, 2008) - Lake Erie College’s game-tying three-pointer careened off the rim as time expired causing the Storm to take a loss to Urbana University, 71-68 in the consolation round of the Ashland Holiday Inn Express Tournament. Lake Erie lagged behind by 13 at the end of the first half, 40-27 and then by as much as 17 in the second half, before posting a comeback that included a 19-8 run to put the Storm within one with three minutes remaining.

With three minutes to play and Lake Erie down by one, 64-63, Urbana hit a jumper to go up by three. Lake Erie’s missed trey at the opposite end was rebounded by freshman center Stephanie Rogers (Mentor, Ohio/Mentor) who made the put back in the paint, making it 66-65 with 1:22 to play. Urbana answered with a three in its next possession before sophomore guard Renese Ames (Bedford, Ohio/Bedford) scored a triple for the Storm from the top of the key. The Blue Knights hit a jumper with 18 seconds remaining and then pressed the full length of the court. Lake Erie got the ball up the court and took a three but the ball was knocked out of bounds in the corner. Trailing 71-68 with seven seconds left, the Storm set up its final play which got a look from deep in the corner. The shot hit off the inside of the rim and went up in the air as the final buzzer sounded.
Lake Erie out shot its opponents percentage-wise from the field, the arc and the free throw line, but came up short in attempts at the stripe as both teams recorded the same number of field goals (25) and 3-pointers (5). The Storm shot a season-best 93-percent from the line (13-for-14) as Urbana went 16-for-20 from the same spot.
Ames led the team with 23 points and three assists and freshman guard Britt Busson (Wadsworth, Ohio/Wadsworth) scored 10. Freshman forward Jen Caiola (South Russell, Ohio/Chagrin Falls) had nine points and sophomore forward Alyssa Wagers (Stow, Ohio/Stow) had a team-leading 11 rebounds.
Lake Erie (1-6) is on the road Saturday, Dec. 6 at Gannon at 1 p.m.
