STORM OPENS NEW YEAR AT FAIRMONT STATE CLASSIC: For the second straight season, the Lake Erie College women's basketball team will open the new year at the Fairmont State University Alumni Classic Jan. 2-3, 2010. The Storm, coming off a 71-62 upset win over Grand Valley State University on Wednesday afternoon, will play undefeated Concord University on Saturday at 4 and host Fairmont State Sunday at 3. Concord and Fairmont State have been idle since Dec. 8 and 21, respectively.
SERIES HISTORY: This is just the second meeting between Lake Erie and both Concord and Fairmont State in women's basketball. The Storm earned a vcitory over Concord (69-63) but lost in overtime to Fairmont State (65-59) at last year's FSU Alumni Classic.
LAST TIME OUT FOR THE STORM: Lake Erie used a 31-7 first-half run to shock perennial power Grand Valley State and then held off a second-half Laker comeback in a 71-62 win to close out 2009 on Wednesday. Jen Caiola led five players in double figures with 16 points. The Storm made up for a 53-34 disadvantage on the boards by holding Grand Valley to just 33.3% shooting and forced 18 turnovers. Sophomore post Stephanie Rogers scored 13 points and junior forward Alyssa Wagers added 12 while each player led LEC with eight rebounds. Off the bench, senior Renese Ames and freshman Sarah Wojciechowski scored 11 and 10 points, respectively.
MILESTONE VICTORY: Lake Erie's 72-61 win Dec. 30 over Grand Valley was the Storm's first against a current member of the Great Lakes Athletic Conference. Previously, the Storm had been 0-14 against GLIAC teams. Lake Erie becomes a full member of the league next season.
APPROACHING RARE TERRITORY: The nine wins by the Storm this
season are already the sixth most in a single season in school
history. Only five teams in LEC's 30 years have reached
double figures in wins, including twice in the last three
years. In addition, head coach Bob Booher is just two wins
shy of becoming the first coach at Lake Erie with 50 wins.
30th SEASON OF STORM HOOPS: This is the 30th season in Lake Erie
women's basketball history dating back to the 1978-79 season.
To date, the Storm has posted an overall record of 161-498
(.244). However, 29 percent of the program's all-time wins
have come in the last five seasons under head coach Bob Booher.
UP NEXT: The Storm stays on the road to play at Central State University on Saturday, Jan. 9. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m.
