Caiola Hits 1,000-Point Mark As Storm Wins Sixth Straight

PAINESVILLE, OHIO –  For the second time this season, the Lake Erie College women's basketball team capped a victory with a player scoring her 1,000th career points. This time it was senior forward Jen Caiola (South Russell, Ohio/Chagrin Falls) who reached the milestone, scoring a game-high 25 points in an 81-71 victory over previously unbeaten Wayne State University Thursday night (Dec. 1) in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) opener for both teams.

In the 700th game in the history of Lake Erie women's basketball, Caiola became the seventh player to surpass the 1,000-point plateau.

She was one of threeplayers in double figures, including a fourth straight double-double by senior center Stephanie Rogers (Mentor, Ohio/Mentor) and another by graduate senior forward Alyssa Wagers (Stow, Ohio/Stow-Munroe Falls) as the Storm improved to 6-0 overall (1-0 GLIAC) for the first time.

The Storm trailed 25-24 with 7:18 left in the first half before a 10-0 run, highlighted by a pair of three-pointers from Caiola, gave Lake Erie a lead it would ultimately never relinquish.  Caiola score 12 points and Wagers added 11 in the first half and LEC took a 38-26 lead into the locker room.

Wayne State (4-1)  closed within three during the opening minutes of the second half, getting the score to 38-35 when Stefani Munro scored to cap a 9-0 run.

But Caiola answered with a three-pointer on the Storm's next possession to kick start a 13-0 run that pushed the lead back into double figures where it stayed for much of the second half.

The Warriors made a late push to get within four with 2:53 to play, but a three by senior guard Britt Busson (Wadsworth, Ohio/Wadsworth) and some solid free throw shooting enabled the Storm to pull away for the 10-point victory.

Lake Erie went 32-of-43 (74.4%) from the foul line to offset an otherwise poor shooting night from the field (21-of-59, 35.6%).

Rogers, who reached the 1,000-point mark earlier this season against Salem International University on Nov. 15, scored 20 points and pulled down a team-high 13 rebounds while blocking four shots.  Wagers finished with 17 points and 10 boards for her second double-double of the year. She (13-of-16) and Caiola (8-of-10) combined to go 21-of-26 from the line.

Phaebre Colbert led Wayne State with 17 points and grabbed 10 rebounds. Deanna Compton also had a double-double with 10 points and a game-high 15 rebounds.  The Warriors totaled 49 boards, becoming the first team to outrebound Lake Erie this season (49-42).

Paige Sickmiller scored 12 and Munro added 10 for the Warriors, who shot 43.5% (30-of-69) overall but were just two-of-13 from three-point range and only nine-of-19 from the foul line.

The Storm will look for its seventh straight win to open the season when it hosts Hillsdale College in a GLIAC contest on Saturday afternoon, Dec. 3, at 1 p.m.
