PAINESVILLE, OHIO – A successful season on the court by the Lake Erie College women's basketball team in 2011-12 was surpassed off the court as the Storm was recognized on the WBCA Academic Top 25 Team Honor Roll on Tuesday (July 17) by the Women's Basketball Coaches Association. Lake Erie was ranked third in NCAA Division II with a cumulative team grade point average of 3.684.
"This is a tremendous accomplishment for the young women in our program," said head coach Bob Booher. "Our student-athletes realize the importance of education and strive to reach their full potential in both basketball and in the classroom. This serves as a great reminder of the quality student-athletes we are attracting to the College and the successes we are having athletically and academically."
The Storm's team GPA was not only the third highest in Division II, but the fourth best overall, trailing just Drury University (II), King College (II), and Northland College (III). Lake Erie is the highest ranked team in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC), which had a total of four schools make the Honor Roll.
In 2011-12, the Storm posted a 16-11 overall record and finished fifth in the GLIAC with a 10-9 league mark, qualifying for the conference tournament for the first time.
The WBCA Academic Top 25 annually recognizes NCAA Divisions I, II and III; NAIA; and junior/community college women's basketball teams across the nation that carry the highest combined grade point averages (GPAs) inclusive of all student-athletes on their rosters for the entire season. The 2011-12 season is the 17th in which the WBCA has produced the honor rolls.
