PAINESVILLE, OHIO -- The Lake Erie College women's basketball team wraps up its season-opening five-game homestand this weekend and begins Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) play with a pair of games starting Thursday night (Nov. 29) against Ferris State University. The Storm, who have won two-of-three to start the season, then host Grand Valley State University on Saturday afternoon (Dec. 1).
LIGHTNING QUICK RECAP: Ashar Harris had her third straight double-double to open the season and the Lake Erie defense shutout Ursuline College for the final seven minutes of the first half en route to an 82-41 (BOX SCORE | RECAP) win on Monday night (Nov. 26).
FERRIS FACTS: Ferris State (1-2) was picked to repeat as the North Division champions in the preseason GLIAC media poll, but has lost two of its first three games under new head coach Colleen Lamoreaux-Tate. Honorable mention All-American Sarah DeShone is the Bulldogs' main weapon, averaging 17.7 points and 5.3 rebounds per game. Last year's GLIAC Freshman of the Year, Christina Branch, is averaging 7.3 points per contest and is shooting 57% from the field.
LAKER LOOK: Grand Valley (3-0) is off to a perfect start heading into its league opener at Ashland University on Thursday. The Lakers have three players scoring in double figures, led by veteran All-GLIAC guard/forward Briauna Taylor at 16.0 ppg. and 9.0 rebounds per contest. Lauren Stodola is at 14.3 ppg. while Alex Stelfox is averaging 13.0 ppg. and 6.7 rpg. for sixth-year head coach Janel Burgess.
SERIES HISTORY: Ferris State has won both times the two teams have met, including a 56-53 win last year (BOX SCORE). The Storm and Grand Valley State have split their first four meetings, and are tied 1-1 in Painesville. Lake Erie won on the road last season,. 75-73 (BOX SCORE).
THE FORECAST: Lake Erie plays its first road game of the season on Sunday, Dec. 9 at Wayne State University. Tip-off is set for 3 p.m.
