CLEVELAND, OHIO – A 14-0 run midway through the first half put host Cleveland State University in control and the Vikings went on to a 70-51 win over the Lake Erie College women's basketball team on Sunday afternoon (Dec. 30) at the Wolstein Center in downtown Cleveland.
The game counted as an exhibition contest for the Storm (2-6), who were playing their final game of the 2012 calendar year. Senior forward Ashar Harris (Columbus, Ohio/Africentric/Morehead State) led Lake Erie with 13 points and 11 rebounds. She was the only player in double figures for the Storm.
Lake Erie trailed just 11-8 with 13:41 left in the first half before the Vikings took charge, going up by 17 at 25-8 on a three-pointer by Shalonda Winton with 9:52 to play before halftime. The 14-0 spurt was part of a 20-4 run that gave the Vikings as big as a 19-point lead at 31-12. It was 38-24 at halftime.
The Storm cut the margin to 10 at 40-30 two minutes into the second half but Cleveland State responded with an 11-0 run that pushed the lead to 21 less than six minutes into the period. Lake Erie wouldn't get closer than 12 points the rest of the way.
Winton picked up her second triple-double of the season, leading all players with 18 points, 12 rebounds and 11 assists. Imani Gordon added 12 points and Cori Coleman had eight for the Vikings (8-4), who won their seventh straight game.
Freshman Shelby Carpenter (Dayton, Ohio/Miami Valley) was one of two Storm players with six points while also adding six steals on defense.
The Storm open 2013 with a pair of Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) road games on the Upper Peninsula starting Thursday, Jan. 3, at Michigan Technological University.
