TWIN GAMES IN WESTERN MICHIGAN: Lake Erie begins Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play with a pair of games in Western Michigan. The Storm will play Ferris State on Thursday evening and Grand Valley State on Saturday afternoon. LEC heads into the two GLIAC games off a highly successful non-conference run. The Green & White went 5-1 in a half-dozen non-league contests: LEC reeled off five straight wins to open the season and then fell at Ursuline in overtime on Sunday. ... Lake Erie has exhibited a strong defense and a balanced offense through six games. No player is averaging more than 11 points per game, and the Storm defense has yielded just 58.8 PPG, a total that ranks first among the GLIAC's 16 teams.
SCOUTING THE BULLDOGS: FSU is 0-2 on the season, with both of its games being in a Louisville, Ky., tournament on Nov. 23-24. In that event -- the United Electric Tipoff Classic -- the Bulldogs lost a close game to host Bellarmine and then were defeated handily by a fifth-ranked Nova Southeastern squad. Ferris State went 13-13 a year ago. ... Senior G SARA DeSHONE has scored 42 points over FSU's two contests. She averaged 17 per game last year in earning a First Team All-GLIAC nod.
SCOUTING THE LAKERS: GVSU is 2-1 and coming off an impressive upset of No. 12 (USA Today Coaches Poll) Lewis (Ill.) on Saturday. The Lakers prevailed, 67-59, in a game that featured 11 ties and 10 lead changes. Senior G DANI CRANDALL scored 16P in that game, she leads GVSU in scoring, at 14.0 PPG. ... The Lakers are averaging 68.3 PPG while yielding 66.0. They have gotten to the free-throw line 27.7 times per game and are shooting 74.7 percent on their charity tosses. ... Grand Valley went 19-8 -- including an 11-2 mark at GVSU Fieldhouse -- a year ago.
