PAINESVILLE, Ohio- The Lake Erie College women's basketball team announced the signees of the early signing class of 2018 on Tuesday (Nov. 20).
The Storm signed four new faces for the 2018-19 season to replace the four graduating seniors at the end of the current 2017-18 season. The new additions include three perimeter players: Maddie Mattimore, Emma Gurley, Sydney Voss and a combo post/wing Lainey Billing.
Madison "Maddie" Mattimore - Guard
High School / High School Coach: Pike-Delta-York HS (Ryan Ripke)
Parents:Damon and Brenda Mattimore
AAU Team / Coach: Toledo Elite (Duffy Burns)
Major: Physical Therapy
Junior Season Stats: Averaged 16.9 points, three rebounds, 2.8 assists per game… shot 36% from three point distance… named All-State Honorable Mention for Division 3… earned First Team All-League and All-District… was the scoring champ for the NWOAL as the team were sectional champions.
Coach Ripke: "Maddie loves the game of basketball and you can tell by the way she plays and practices. Every time she steps on the floor, she is trying to make herself better. A fierce competitor who hates to lose and loves to be told she can't do something because she will prove you wrong."
Coach Burns: "One of the top prospects at the guard position in Northwest Ohio. Her abilities to score, to handle and pass, to create offense for others makes her a perfect college prospect. Maddie has improved every year for the past seven years and she will continue that improvement as she transitions to the college game."
Coach Booher: "We are excited to add Maddie and her skill set to the Storm program. We see her playing both the point and off guard and her ability to score and distribute are great assets. She is the rare player who doesn't need the ball in her hands to be a difference maker."
Emma Gurley – Wing
High School / High School Coach:Gilmour Academy (John Curran)
AAU Team: TNBA
Major: Criminal Justice
Junior Season Stats: Averaged 8.7 points and 2.3 rebounds per game with a 46% field goal and 39% three point shooting percentage… named Northeast All-District as the Lancers won sectionals, district, regionals en route to a OHSAA State Champion… will also play softball at Lake Erie.
Coach Curran:"Emma is a really tough, competitive player who can help a team in many ways. She's a knock-down shooter who is strong with the ball, as well as a hard-nosed defender who can guard multiple positions on the floor. She is a great leader and teammate who will be a valuable addition to both the basketball and softball programs at Lake Erie."
Emma Gurley: "I chose Lake Erie because it offers me the unique opportunity to play both sports in a very comfortable and home-like environment."
Coach Booher: "Emma will be a welcome addition to the Storm program. She knows how to win and is truly a "gym rat." She has three point range, will attack the hoop, and play physical at both ends of the floor. She's not afraid to take a charge, dive on the floor, and do the little things it takes to win."
Sydney Voss – Wing
High School / High School Coach:Trenton (William Jones)
Parents:Steven and Christina Voss
AAU Team / Coach: First String (Will Jones)
Major: Pre-Physical Therapy
Junior Season Stats: Averaged 8.3 points, 5.2 rebounds, and 1.8 steals per game… shot 41% from the floor and 70% from the free throw line… named All-Conference Second Team and has been a three year captain.
Coach Jones: "Sydney is that rare example of a young person that blends high-echelon athleticism, on and off-court intelligence, and a strong love of the game. When paired with her natural abilities and work ethic; a very formidable competitor and tremendous teammate is the outcome. She's been a valuable part of the Trenton High School girls' basketball program and the FSA Travel Teams. I'm excited for her to have the opportunity to continue as a student-athlete at Lake Erie."
Coach Booher: "Adding Sydney to the roster is a real positive because of her multiple talents. Her length as a guard will help us defensively and as a rebounder; her ball handling and passing will give us another point guard option; and her shooting range can open up the floor for teammates."
Lainey Billing – Wing/Post
High School / High School Coach:Bishop Watterson (Tom Woodford)
Parents:Jay and Judy Billing
AAU Team / Coach: Capital City Comets (Lori Kopyar)
Junior Season Stats: Averaged 13 points and four rebounds per game… shot 43% from the floor… has been a starter each of the last three years where the team has won the conference title… named All-Conference First Team as Bishop Watterson went 21-4 with a sectional championship.
Coach Woodford: "Lainey's understanding of the game and natural instincts set her apart from many athletes she has competed against."
Coach Booher: "Lainey is a winner. Defensively, she is quick enough to guard the perimeter and is strong and fundamentally sound when defending taller opponents in the post. She'll box out, set screens go after loose balls and do the little things that don't show up in the stats. Offensively, she is a good shooter inside the arc and can get to the basket and finish."
