GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.--The Lake Erie College women's lacrosse team overcame an early deficit to defeat Adams State University, 18-11, on Monday (March 4) on the campus of Colorado Mesa University in Grand Junction, Colo. to open their 2013 campaign.
The Grizzlies (0-2) jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead in the first three minutes of play. Following a timeout, Lake Erie (1-0) stormed back, scoring the next three goals, off the sticks of Julia Kudla (Harleysville, Pa./Souderton), Ashriel West (Jamesville, N.Y./Jamesville Dewitt) and Meredith Howe (Fayetteville, N.Y./Jamesville Dewitt), to tie it up. After the Grizzlies regained the lead, 4-3, the Storm scored the next three, one from Michaela Schock (Dover, Del./Caesar Rodney) and two from Kudla, to pull ahead 6-4. The momentum continued for the Storm the rest of the first-half, grabbing control of the game by scoring five of the final six first-half goals.
Lake Erie scored three quick goals in the second-half to pull ahead 14-6 before the Grizzlies ended their scoreless streak at the twenty-one minute mark. Adams State fought back late in the second-half but it was not enough as the Storm picked up the win in their season opener.
Kudla led the way for the Storm with five goals and four assists. Howe and West ended the game with four goals apiece. Hana Abu-Kwiek (Lewis Center, Ohio/Olentangy Orange) and Brittany Rabuano (Auburn, N.Y./Auburn) scored two goals each while Schock ended with a goal and assist. Kim Dang (Canton, Ohio/Massillon Jackson) added an assist. Freshman Katie Holden (Whitby, Ontario/Anderson C.V.I.) picked up the win in the net for the Storm.
The Storm are back in action on Wednesday, taking on Colorado Mesa University.
