GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.--The Lake Erie College women's lacrosse team improved to 3-0 for the first time in the program's four-year history as the Storm defeated McKendree University 24-8 in a neutral site game in Grand Junction, Colo.
Julia Kudla (Harleysville, Pa./Souderton) led the Storm with 13 points on four goals and nine assists while also collecting a game-high eight groundballs and controlling four draws.
The Storm jumped out to a four goal lead early in the first-half and did not look back. The Bearcats brought the game to 5-3 at 18:54 in the first-half, but the Storm recovered and scored seven of the next 10 goals to take a 12-6 advantage into the locker room.
Lake Erie scored two quick goals in the second-half to increase their lead to 14-6 before McKendree got on the board in the second-half. From that point, the Storm took firm control of the game, closing it out by outscoring the Bearcats 10-1 to capture their third straight win to open their 2013 campaign.
Kudla had a game-high 13 points for the Storm. Meredith Howe (Fayetteville, N.Y./Jamesville Dewitt) led the Storm in scoring with six goals while adding two assists. Ashriel West (Jamesville, N.Y./Jamesville Dewitt) was second on the team with four goals and one assist. Kim Dang (Canton, Ohio/Massillon Jackson) and Hana Abu-Kwiek (Lewis Center, Ohio/Olentangy Orange) had three goals and an assist apiece. Brittany Rabuano (Auburn, N.Y./Auburn) had two goals. Samantha Gryba (Okotoks, Alberta/National Sport Academy) and Michaela Schock (Dover, Del./Caesar Rodney) had a goal and an assist apiece.
Katie Holden (Whitby, Ontario/Anderson C.V.I.) picked up the win in net for the Storm, making three saves. Overall, the Storm had 22 groundballs to the Bearcats seven, and turned the ball over only three times.
The Storm are back in action Wednesday when they travel to Erie, Pa. to face Mercyhurst University.
