ERIE, Pa.-- The Lake Erie College women's lacrosse team fell for the first time this season at 15th ranked Mercyhurst University, 16-7, in Erie, Pa. on Wednesday (March 13).
The Storm (3-1) got on the board early when Hana Abu-Kwiek (Lewis Center, Ohio/Olentangy Orange) took the opening draw down the field to score the quick goal. Lake Erie caused a turnover off the following draw and increased their lead to 2-0 when Julia Kudla (Harleysville, Pa./Souderton) found Meredith Howe (Fayetteville, N.Y./Jamesville Dewitt) for the goal. Mercyhurst responded in a big way, rattling off eleven unanswered goals to go ahead 11-2. Ashriel West (Jamesville, N.Y./Jamesville Dewitt) found the back of the net two more times over the remainder of the first-half, but trailed 12-4.
The Lakers scored two goal to open the second-half, increasing their lead to 15-4. The Storm scored three of the final four goals, two from West and one from Kudla, but were unable to overcome the deficit.
West lead the Storm with four goals. Kudla recorded four points on one goal and three assist while Howe and Abu-Kwiek rounded out the scoring. Howe also had one assist. Emily Rock (Hamilton, Ohio/Lakota West) made eight saves for the Storm in relief.
Rebecca Himes led Mercyhurst with eight points on five goals and three assists. The Lakers out shot the Storm 40-11and had a 19-6 advantage on the draws. The teams were even on groundballs with 13 each.
The Storm are back in action Saturday (March 16) when they travel to Bloomsburg University.
