ALLENDALE, Mich.--The Lake Erie College women's lacrosse team was unable to overcome Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference foe Grand Valley State University, falling 16-10 in Allendale, Mich. on Friday (April 5), snapping their four-game winning streak.
The Lakers (4-5, 1-0 GLIAC) scored the first two goals of the contest before Michaela Schock (Dover, Del./Caesar Rodney) got the Storm (7-3, 1-1 GLIAC) on the board. Meredith Howe (Fayetteville, N.Y./Jamesville Dewitt) scored two goals following a Laker goal to tie the game at three. Grand Valley responded by scoring three straight goals to retake the lead, 6-3. Hana Abu-Kwiek (Lewis Center, Ohio/Olentangy Orange) cut the deficit to 6-4 before the Lakers, once again, rattled off three straight goals. Howe scored her third goal of the halfin closing minutes but the Storm trailed 9-5 at the half.
After an early Grand Valley goal in the second half, Ashriel West (Jamesville, N.Y./Jamesville Dewitt) scored a man-up goal. The Lakers then went on an offensive barrage, scoring four straight goals to pull ahead 14-6. Schock and Howe added another goal each, and Julia Kudla (Harleysville, Pa./Souderton) scored two goals in the second half, but it was not enough to overcome the Lakers.
Kudla led the Storm with six points on two goals and four assists while Howe finished with four goals and one assist. Schock had two goals while West and Abu-Kwiek had a goal apiece to round out the Storm scoring. Alex Freeman (Syracuse, N.Y./Jamesville Dewitt) collected a team-high six groundballs.
Allyson Fritts led the Lakers with seven points on five goals, two assists. Audrey Kobe made six saves in a winning effort in net. The Lakers owned advantages in draw controls (18-10) and groundballs (36-25).
The Storm look to rebound from the loss when they play host to GLIAC opponent Urbana University on April 12.
