PAINESVILLE, Ohio-- The Lake Erie College women's lacrosse team flew past the Wheeling Jesuit University Cardinals 23-1 in a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) contest on senior day in Painesville on Sunday (April 28).
The Storm (13-4, 7-1 GLIAC) took a 3-0 lead to being the game before the Cardinals (5-12, 3-5 GLIAC) got on the board. Lake Erie Scored responded by scoring 10 unanswered goals to close the first half. Ashriel West (Jamesville, N.Y./Jamesville Dewitt) led the Storm with three goals and one assist in the first half while Julia Kudla (Harleysville, Pa./Souderton) tallied six points with two goals and four assists. Mihaela Schock (Dover, Del./Caesar Rodney), Meredith Howe (Fayetteville, N.Y./Jamesville, Dewitt), Samantha Gryba (Okotoks, Ontario/National Sport Academy) and Hana Abu-Kwiek (Lewis Center, Ohio/Olentangy Orange) all had two first half goals.
Lake Erie's defense controlled the second half, allowing zero shots and forcing the Cardinals to 0-8 on clear attempts as the offense added 10 goals to seal the win.
West ended the game with five goals and one assist. Kudla and Howe tallied three goals and five assists apiece. Abu-Kwiek had three goals and two assists and Schock had two goals and one assist while Gryba finished with two goals. Allison Trombetti (Lewis Center, Ohio/Olentangy) had a goal and an assist in the second half. Brittany Rabuano (Auburn, N.Y./Auburn), Kim Dang (Canton, Ohio/Massillon Jackson) and Stephanie Meister (Dublin, Ohio/Dublin) rounded out the Storm scoring.
Katie Holden (Whityby, Ontario/Anderson C.V.I.) picked up the win in net, her twelfth of the season. Lake Erie owned a 34-13 advantage in groundballs, led by Kudla's eight and Schock's six, and forced 18 turnovers. Howe and and Abu-Kwiek had four caused turnovers apiece.
The Storm end the regular season with a school record 13 wins. They will be competing in the 2013 GLIAC Women's Lacrosse Championship tournament, held at Grand Valley State University, next weekend.
