Seven Storm Wrestlers to Compete at ASICS University Nationals in Akron
PAINESVILLE, OHIO – Seven members of the Lake Erie College wrestling team will compete this weekend at the 2012 ASICS University and FILA Cadet National Championships held at the University of Akron beginning Friday (June 1). The event is presented by USA Wrestling and the Greater Cleveland Sports Commission at Akron's Louis and Freda Stile Athletic Field House.
The event features athletes between 18-and-24 years of age from some of the nation's top college wrestling programs and U.S. Military teams. Traditionally, athletes who perform well at the University Nationals go on to careers on the U.S. Senior World and Olympic teams.
The finalists at the seven weight classes qualify for the 2012 University World Team Trials in Colorado Springs, Colo., in mid-August.
"This competition is really the 'best of the best' nationally, with a lot of the athletes coming from the Division I ranks and Olympic Training Center," said head coach Kevin Hoogenboom. "It will be a great offseason test for our wrestlers as they begin their preparation for next season and I know they are very excited about the opportunity to compete in such a highly regarded and world-class event."
Six of the Storm representatives will compete in the Freestyle competition while one will be featured in the Greco-Roman arena. The freestyle wrestlers from Lake Erie will be rising Zak Vargo (Stow, Ohio/Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy), Josh Linden (Broadview Heights, Ohio/Brecksville-Broadview Heights), Tyler Tesny (Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio/Cuyahoga Falls), Zev Green (Marysville, Ohio/Marysville) and Jared Merritt (Cranesville, Pa./Northwestern) along with sophomore Dylan Zivcic (Mentor, Ohio/Mentor/Lakeland).
Vargo will wrestle at 70 kg (154 ¼ lbs) while Zivcic, Linden, Tesny and Green will all compete in the 79 kg (174 lbs.) division. Merritt is in the 84 kg (185 lbs.) weight class.
Redshirt sophomore Jacob Brown (Jefferson, Ohio/Pymatuning Valley/Waldorf) will wrestle Greco-Roman, competing at 74 kg (163 lbs.).
The FILA Cadet Nationals features some of the best high school talent in the country (ages 15-17).
